This story reminds me of a wealthy American I knew years ago who had an apartment in Rio which I once visited. He liked to pick up rough trade in the evenings and take them back to his place. I sometimes wonder what happened to him. This was at the turn of the century.

So funny when you said 'turn of the century' i thought huh 1900s? Then I was alike omg I'm older since 'turn of the century' means early 2000s nowadays.

Sad as this tragic story is, let’s not forget that in general it is Brazilians who suffer violence, including getting stabbed to death in their apartments.

I dated a very nice young Brazilian, Murilo R, some years back. He was a model with a very nice body. He had been photographed by Rick Day and he was making a career for himself. Murilo shared in the rent of an apartment by an older Brazilian man. That middle-aged man had invited a younger guy back to his home for sex when he was robbed and stabbed - Murilo was unaware of this and on coming home, he was confronted, stabbed and killed by the thief.

I always catch myself when I say Turn of the century. As someone who writes a lot of historical tracts, I am now used to saying At the turn of the last century or At the turn of the 20th century to mean 1900.

What a tragic story all around.  Now their teenage son wants for nothing from a financial standpoint, but has lost both parents - one to a gruesome murder in a foreign country, the other now to be tried for said gruesome murder.

He was already tried in a U.S. federal court and was convicted in May. Sentencing has been set for November 4 and he faces a life sentence.

Thank you for the update. I'm obviously behind on the latest developments in this story. Based on what I've read, I have no doubt the conviction was well deserved. That said, it's tragic that this poor young man has now lost both of his parents unnecessarily.
