What part of the country ? Urban/ suburban or rural / small town ?

My class ended up having a fairly large percentage of gay students. About 15% of my classmates now identify as either gay or bisexual. But as of 1989 not a single person I knew, in the entire high school openly identified as gay or bisexual. (Even though I privately knew a few were getting it on)..even two if them with teachers !

I came out between my Sophomore and Junior year in '85, and I was the only out student in my High School during my four years there. I noticed a change for young people around the time My So Called Life aired in the mid-1990's.

Coming out in the 1980's was not only tough enough in terms of general societal acceptance, but mainstream society starting to learn of AIDS crisis made it exponentially more difficult. My mom, while supportive of me as a person, was 100% sure I was going to die of AIDS at first.

Sounds like my parents. They still worry about AIDS, even after all the advances.

I attended high school in the early 90s, but it wasn't a very good high school (one common afterschool event was watching cops arrest gang members walking out the front door). I heard that later in the 90s, a single guy came out and was considered brave. I just waited until college.

Close-in DC suburb, so exceptionally educated and progressive compared to most of the rest of the country. The environment certainly made the decision possible as compared to what I would have encountered most anywhere else.

Like you, a fair number of people came out later in college or young adulthood. And, yeah, I ran into one of my old teachers at a gay club (with 18+ nights) when I was back home visiting from college.
