Shohei must be happy.  He threw a one hit shutout against Detroit today for his 1st career CG. He went 0-5 in that game, but has hit his major league leading 37th in the 2nd game, which us still in the third inning, so he'll probably get to 40 by the 7th inning stretch.

The Angels lead Toronto 1-0 going into the bottom of the 1st.  3 guesses how they got their run...

So much for the Angels! After going all in to make the playoffs they are 0-6 since the trade deadline. Gonna lose Ohtani now for nothing. They should seriously think about trading Mike Trout at some point. He has 7 years left on a 12 year extension. He has a full no trade clause but I can't imagine he wouldn't be willing to waive it to go to a better team.

Yeah, but the A's can't afford him.

Lars Nootbaar fouled a ball into a place that no one wants to be hit during Wednesday’s 8-0 loss to the Athletics.

Nootbaar, 25, was up in the bottom of the fifth against starter Paul Blackburn at Busch Stadium when he fouled an 0-1 pitch into the ground and it ricocheted into his groin area.

The outfielder crumpled to the ground in pain almost immediately before a team trainer could come out to attend to him.  Nootbaar remained in the game for the rest of the at-bat and struck out, but he was replaced in the middle of the sixth inning by Jose Fermin.

The team announced that Nootbar left with what they called a lower abdomen contusion.

This just reported by MLB insider Hector Gomez. The word from a source close to the investigation of Tampa Bay Rays superstar shortstop Wander Franco is that he will likely never play in the MLB again. They are investigating a relationship between him and a minor.

He's been accused by a 2nd girl.

I just saw this too on his wikipedia page:

Franco married his girlfriend after the 2021 MLB season. The pair have a son, Wander Samuel Franco Jr., born in late 2018, and have another son, born in 2022.

Just shocking that only is he married with two kids but he was born March 2001 so that means he got his gf pregnant in March 2018 when he was 17. And I'm sure it wasn't the first time then he had relations with her. Someone just dropped the ball with raising him that's a big part of the problem.

It may be shocking that he married her that young, but two teenagers having carnal relations?  Absolutely unheard of among children who were raised right.

The Yankees just suck.

Yes, but you just have to embrace the absurdity that the most expensive team in each league's history will miss the playoffs, probably finish with a losing record, and possibly both finish last.

My sister's a Met fan, and her hubby's a Yankee fan.  They were hoping for a Subway Series; instead they got two train wrecks.

How do you say OY-VEY in Japanese?

Shohei Ohtani Diagnosed With Tear In UCL, Will Not Pitch Again This Season

It isn’t clear if he’ll require surgery; Ohtani is seeking a second opinion before making that decision.

Ohtani started the first game of today’s doubleheader against the Reds. He departed in the second inning with what the team initially announced as arm fatigue. He underwent imaging between games and learned of the ligament damage. He nevertheless played in the nightcap as the designated hitter, going 1-5.

Since pushing in two of their top prospects for Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo López at the trade deadline, the Halos have gone 9-18. They’re a season-worst six games under .500 after being swept by the Reds. Their playoff hopes had all but evaporated even before tonight’s news both that Ohtani would no longer be able to pitch and that Mike Trout was headed back to the injured list. It has been a staggeringly brutal few weeks even for a franchise no stranger to disappointment.

Angels To Place Mike Trout On Injured List

GM Perry Minasian informed reporters that Trout remained in too much discomfort when hitting to continue playing.  The three-time MVP had just returned from an IL stay on Tuesday.

The Yankees GM earlier yesterday called their season a disaster but the Angels take the cake right back. They are gonna have to start from scratch like I said and they have no farm system. They need to trade Mike Trout this offseason and start a rebuild. I have no idea what Ohtani's gonna get now in free agency. He's still a great hitter and if he gets Tommy John he can come back and DH middle of next season like Bryce Harper did at least but he might just have to stick with hitting. He's come out of so many games this year as a pitcher. Or he needs to start with not serving as the DH maybe in games that he pitches.

FUN PERFORMANCE OF THE DAY:

Milwaukee's 100-MPH-throwing rookie reliever Abner Uribe is having an excellent year.  Today was a little bit less so...  Abner Doubleday would've been rolling over in his grave (with laughter) because his namesake:

Faced 4 batters

Threw 18 pitches

Walked 3 and hit the other

Threw 3 wild pitches

First cut player today was Josh Donaldson of the Yankees. He is close to returning from his injury and they wanted to let him possibly get a new team by Sept 1 so he'd be postseason roster eligible.

Star outfielder becomes MLB's first 30-60 man on his wedding night

NL MVP race is shifting now

Mookie is having a spectacular year as well, so...

AND... who'd a-thunk it when he was chasing .400, but Luis Arraez leads Freddie Freeman by only .011 in the batting race with a month to go, so the chase is on...

Mookie Betts had an August for the ages.

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ superstar finished the month with an absurd .455 batting average, 11 home runs and 51 hits, leading the franchise to its first 24-win month since moving to the West Coast.

Betts’ red-hot month not only inserted him into the National League MVP conversation, it also helped Los Angeles all but put away the NL West.

But Thursday night, during a thrilling 8-7 loss to the Braves at Dodger Stadium, Betts elevated his month of August from excellent to historic, going 2-for-4 with two home runs, a walk and three runs scored.

The performance helped Betts become just the third player since 1900 — and first in nearly a century — to have a .450+ batting average with 50-plus hits and 10-plus home runs in a single month, joining all-time greats Babe Ruth (July 1923 and 1924) and Lou Gehrig (June 1930), according to ESPN Stats & Info.

It was just the 12th time in MLB history that a player hit .450-plus and hit 10-plus home runs in a calendar month (min. 90 PAs) and the first time since Barry Bonds did it in April 2004.

Altuve hit back to back homers with Mauricio Dubon twice last night. The second time was in his final at bat of the game. Then tonight he homered in the first, second, and third innings in Houston's second straight annihilation of Texas. So that was four consecutive homers for him and five in six at bats. He was 0-2 after that tonight and then they took him out to rest, so he did not get a chance for a fourth one tonight, but he's had a decent couple of days.

All I hear about is what a monster lineup they have and how they score the most runs but most of that came in April & May mainly. They haven't been quite as scary since then.
