Lifeguards are definitely athletes. And they train in a similar fashion to competitive swimmers. I know the requirements for me to be a lifeguard at a public pool was less that what would be required to guard at an open-water facility, but we still had to swim x miles every week and once a month had to meet some timed requirements to retain our whistles and red lifeguard trunks.
