It’s been a long time, 22 years, since I was in Cuba, yet I still vividly remember how hard life was for Cubans.  I didn’t think things could get any worse, but oh my God, conditions have gotten so much worse.  When I think of the suffering of the Cuban people, coupled with the beautiful poetry of José Martí, I cry every time I listen to “Guantanamera.”

I'm lucky:  Saw this remarkable woman sing this soulful song at the better than your concert hall Hollywood Bowl.  Twice.

I had never heard this beautiful piece before.  For others, who like myself, are unable to clearly hear/understand the lyrics as they are being sung in the video, I offer the following copy of the lyrics that I was able to find:

"Little Sparrow"

Little sparrow, little sparrow
Precious fragile little thing
Little sparrow, little sparrow
Flies so high and feels no pain
All ye maidens hede my warning
Never trust the hearts of men
They will crush you like a sparrow
Leaving you to never mend
They will vow to always love you
Swear no love but yours will do
Then they'll leave you for another
Break your little heart in two

Little sparrow, little sparrow
Precious fragile little thing
Little sparrow, little sparrow
Flies so high and feels no pain

If I were a little sparrow
O'er these mountains I would fly
I would find him, I would find him
Look into his lying eyes
I would flutter all around him
On my little sparrow wings
I would ask him, I would ask him
Why he let me love in vain

I am not a little sparrow
I am just the broken dream
Of a cold false-hearted lover
And his evil cunning scheme

Little sparrow, little sparrow
Precious fragile little thing
Little sparrow, little sparrow
Flies so high and feels no pain

All ye maidens fair and tender
Never trust the hearts of men
They will crush you like a sparrow
Leaving you to never mend

Little sparrow, little sparrow
Oh the sorrow never ends

Recent postings brought this particular topic to my attention. For a day I’ve been asking myself - “What song makes me emotional?” I even asked a friend, who replied, “Oh! For Christ’s sake, Michael! You can’t get through ‘What I Did For Love’ without weeping!”

Well, all right, then.

Remember Me.  One of Ashford & Simpson's best compositions and Diana Ross' vocals as far as I am concerned.  Not many break-up songs have this level of maturity.

Lyrics:

Bye baby
See you around
Didn't I tell you
I wouldn't hold you down

Take good care of yourself, ya'hear
Don't let me hear about you shedding a tear
You're gonna make it
You're gonna make it

Remember me as a sunny day
That you once had
Along the way
Didn't I inspire you a little higher

Remember me as a funny clown
That made you laugh when you were down
Didn't I, boy?
Didn't I, boy?

Remember me as a big balloon
At a carnival that ended too soon
Remember me as a breath of spring
Remember me as a good thing

Bye baby
See you around
I already know
About the new love you've found

What can I do but wish you well
What we had was really swell
I won't forget it, no, I have no regrets

Remember me as a sound of laughter
And my face the morning after
Didn't the sky beckon us to fly?

Yes, you'll remember the times we fought
But don't forget me in your tender thoughts
Please, darlin'
Oh yeah

Remember me when you drink the wine
Of sweet success, I gave you my best
Remember me with every song you sing
Remember me as a good thing

Remember me as a sunny day
Please darling
Remember me as a good thing
Remember me when you drink the wine
Remember me as a good thing
Remember me as a big balloon
Don't forget me, baby
