I always did this with my former trainer, and I assumed it was customary. But this year, when I tipped ($300 gift card) my new trainer, who has been in the business for more than a decade, he thanked me, and said he was quite touched: apparently I was the first client who had ever tipped him like this at the holidays. I was shocked  — what is the MATTER with people???

Why, thank you! (Full disclosure, though: I’m not anywhere near as big as my avatar LOL). About Josh: he did a natural bodybuilding competition in 2016 or thereabouts, and placed pretty high, maybe second place? He’s got no immediate plans to compete again. He found prep really difficult, and rather than yo-yo between bulk and cut, he prefers to just keep himself in the best possible aesthetic shape year round. 

Speaking as a client, I find it best NOT to ask how a provider plans to spend what I pay him … Just sayin’

I’ve been training with Josh for a year now, and I have never in my life had to exert this much self control  — and I’m not talking about the diet/exercise regimen. He’s a total sweetheart, an absolutely brilliant trainer (he’s put an improbable amount of muscle on me), and a friend. Fortunately for me 1) he’s straight, and 2) the workouts he puts me through make it impossible to think about anything but survival. But do I still want to lick his biceps whenever I’m near him? Yes: yes, I do …

Why would any one think of doing that?   Boundaries, Boundaries.  Even if it's somebody I know very well, we don't talk about each other's money.  Truthfully, I'm not even that curious about how much any of my friends make.   Why would it be any different with a provider?  Are those boundaries somehow suspended in the case of a  provider.  Moneywise, the only thing I need to know from him is how much he's going to cost me.
