  1. I think Tasso was referring to American French-speakers not American-French speakers (and by American, of the continent not of the US). At the risk or Anglo-splaining (if there were such a thing), the misunderstanding seems to hinge on overlooking a distinction between two separate groups of (North) American French speakers, [non-bilingual] anglophones who are speaking in French and francophone Quebeckers. Anglos speaking French, whether they are from the US or Canada would probably have similar accents, and may be disparaged by people in France. Quebeckers, as you note, speak French differently than other francophones, and as I understand it, they are also disparaged by the French. Obviously the two groups can't be lumped in together.

*I deliberately referred to people who speak Quebec French because I know there are francophone immigrants (form Haiti, Africa and Lebanon for example) who form yet another group of North American French speakers.

Yes, that's all I was saying (without as much detail). I hope he hears it better from you than me.

  2. Man, all I know is everytime I speak French in France people assume I'm Quebecois. The same American accent the French hate.

You always respond to people that something's a dumb statement? You must be awfully smart ;)

I'm not taking the bait of the pointless insult. I'm more interested in solving a misunderstanding.

Your first message was commenting about Montreal/Quebec French and now your talking about France. I don't know about France (that you mention in your last post), I was commenting on Quebec (in your first post). Quebec French and France French are quite different, accent and vocabulary - which you probably know given you say you speak French. There is no "American French" in Quebec, which is what your first message said. And Quebec IS a different culture, with a distinct history, language and legal code from the rest of Canada.

  3. A Canadian accent and a US accent are usually the same in French. French don't hear a Canadian accent or a US accent, just an American accent.

Canadian French in Quebec is mostly a first language - and there is no English accent, whether that be Canadian or USA. So it's not "American French." In terms of Quebecois not being able to pick out accents between their fellow English Canadians and foreigners (such as USA) … that's a grand and dumb statement. There is a high percentage of Quebecers that are bilingual

  4. A lot of people think because many in Montreal primarily speak French, they're in another culture. They forget these are Americans who share more with the US than France. (Their French is even American French, which the French hate). In fact, the area is much more like Detriot or Buffalo. They watch American shows and many worked at the General Motors 3-Rivers plant, etc. It's somewhat blue collar. The Montreal greater metropolitan area includes Burlington, VT.

    Quebecers.

They're Canadians speaking Canadian French. What is American French? Are you thinking Louisiana Patois?

We came for for Formula 1 and stayed nearby so had to walk the street every day. It has to be the most depressing place I have ever been to. Homeless people begging for money, junkies - young people and very old ladies of the night except it was day time. I did not dare step out of my door after dark.

The shops were run down and like the whole place - depressing. Glad I am leaving in the morning

Ask Karen C about Gay Village

This one made me laugh. The girl needs to get out of Celebration, Florida and join the real world.

  6. we are not "(rewriting) history and reviews"!!.....there is nothing "historic" about the reviews and they are there to be read, not rewritten....jeez......

137/197 "excellent" and "very good" reviews - and 169/197 if you include "average" - is absolutely acceptable......frankly, I don't know what has bothered you about this at all.......did you have a bad experience recently?.....St Catherine has never pretended to be anything other than what it is.....I have to wonder if Rodeo Dr and 5th Avenue are the only streets acceptable to you......why are you upset??

Rodeo Drive … super over hyped.

  7. When I was in the USN and stationed in Naples, Italy (1988-1990) I travelled a LOT, practically going somewhere every weekend even if it was just to Pompeii, Capri, the Amalfi coast, or Rome. On longer weekends we’d head up to Florence and Venice. Coolest city I ever visited was San Gimignano.

At the beginning and end of my four year tour of duty in Italy I took the train around on a long Eurail Pass hitting a few of the major cities - Viennna, Amsterdam, etc., and once spending five days in Paris. While there I spent the entire day at Versailles and enjoyed it immensely, as others have said the gardens probably more so than the palace. The grounds are expansive, the palace quite stunning, especially the famous Hall of Mirrors. All in all is was a grand adventure to be sure.

San Gimignano sounds really great. Have you ever been back?

  8. Thank you. You're correct that the hospital I see on the way back to the aeroport is MUHC. It looks huge.

On other fronts, I went to the ER on a Saturday night around 9pm because I needed to start PEP after being exposed to HIV by a dancer/escort from Taboo. The interesting thing is, had my emergency occurred during the weekday Mon-Fri, or earlier in the day Saturday , I wouldn't have had to spend nearly $1500 at the ER.....as I was told there are several Clinics and/or Outreach places in Montreal that offer PEP for free or significantly reduced costs. I was told it's "common" protocol and they are used to dolling out PEP in large Canadian cities like Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver.

In BC, starting on January 1, 2018, PReP has been made available to high-risk groups for free. It's part of prevention. Aim is to have 5,000 high risk individuals on PReP, part of the public health strategy to have the HIV infection rate reduced by 85% by 2020.

  9. I am sorry, but I am also very tired of the "miracle" metaphor that is used all the time in America. This is hard work, expertise and science, all by humans, no miracle involved.

Sometimes it isn't even used as a metaphor, I am so fed up of parents who have their child being saved from cancer by doctors working on it for 12 months, backed by 50 years of scientific research, and then the parents calling it a miracle and thanking whatever their favorite god is. How about thanking the doctors, who actually did something?

People that believe in miracles, shouldn't use electricity, cause that's science

  10. I did walk all the areas mentioned in this thread one night, just for fun, from about midnight until 2am. Even got some hankies (the blue one that signifies "top" and the green one that signifies "hustler") and hung 'em out my back pocket, for anyone who knows what the handkerchief code is (wiki it). I dunno how many people still recognize it, I did it more for the novelty of it, for my own self-amusement, than anything else.

This was a few weeks back, I think it was a Friday or Saturday when I tried. No luck, heh. Went up Church Street/The Village of course, as well. Spotted an acquiantance (who's a stripper at Remingtons) coming back from work, walked with him for a bit and caught up. We got stopped by a few guys that he knows, but no one wanted to have us back to their place for a paid session, they were nearing the end of their nights and saying goodbyes to friends outside of the clubs and had probably already gotten laid or were simply out for a night of drinks and laughs (I'm not personally into much of the Village's scene -- can't dance, but I can fuck, hah -- but I enjoy it peripherally from time to time).

It was a thrill to walk around specifically on the prowl for potential clients. Bit of danger to it. I'd have to think on my feet if someone picked me up in their car (text my fellow escort/safety-buddy what kind of car I was getting into, plate, plus address if client provided it).

Made sure to make eye contact with everyone I passed. Throw a smile/smirk (that ain't a put-on, since I'm pretty friendly in general, but making sure to do it for nearly everyone you pass becomes intentional).

I'll try it again some day, if I'm feeling restless and adventurous some hot summer night.

I wonder if you can go to places like Statlers (piano bar), Pegasus, Woody's, or The Eagle (the only Church Street bar I just haven't gotten around to going into yet, though me and a friend waited in line one night for 45 minutes before giving up) and have much of a chance of picking up. I see people on here talking about hanging around the bars/lounges in high end hotels as well, though that seems to be a technique employed less and less.

    Curious. What's your age?

  11. The hospital E.R. I went to was located on Ste Catherine and St Denis. It would be interesting to know if there is better quality service at the University Hospital?

On other fronts, I always see that huge hospital while taking the 747 Aeroport bus back to YUL.

That hospital is way outside of the city centre.

Not within walking distance for sure, it's a fairly direct Metro connection though, as is a lot of the City, but then I didn't bring this up anyway.

  12. I had exactly the same reaction when I was there a couple of weeks ago. A local source reports that the derelict evangelical church at the corner of Papineau will be coming down soon, to be replaced by condos. And there is an upscale development at Montcalm and Rene-Levesque that is being heavily advertised in Fugues.

Several years ago, a local friend told me that the Village was about to gentrify (based on various things, including the relative proximity of the new University Hospital). His prediction seems to be coming true.

    It's a massive hospital

  13. A former Stock dancer whom I met at Campus claimed that there was a mass migration of 15 Stock dancers to Campus around December (IIRC, this was reported here in the MC at the time). When I challenged him about the number, he started counting on his fingers and, without much difficulty, came up with 12.

Didn't a bunch quit and go on to other things around then also - jobs, school etc.?

  14. Ever since I was a young'n, I told my sister I would NOT be Uncle Sam if she ever had kids.

It took her a long time to find the right guy... She had her first kid at 37+, & her second 3 1/2 years later... ironically, the exact same timetable as our mother.

I was pleasantly surprised when I was with her one day during the first pregnancy... she started talking to her belly, and introduced me to the baby as Tio Sam (we're English-speaking Jews). Both my nephew & niece grew up calling me Tio Sam.

They're both in college now, and they still call me Tio Sam. I'm still not sure if they actually realize I'm their uncle. (I didn't say they were in good colleges. ;):D:rolleyes:)

    Uncle
