In my high school (suburban Seattle, 70's) they were used was used as a general insult whether you were gay, suspected gay or if someone just didn't like you.  

I identify as gay and queer doesn't bother me.

I've reached out to guys on MB - the response rate has been very low.  At this point I don't even bother unless the ad is fairly recent.  Have never met up with anybody from there.
