I had never heard of this film, and then read its release got caught up in the Covid mess of 2020. I remember following the actual story in the NY Times. The movie is based on Mohamedou Ould Slahi's 2015 memoir, a horrific true story.
This is not an easy story to sit through, especially if you are conflicted about America's corruption and use of torture post 9/11. I think it's a story every American should get to know.
I thought the performances were terrific. Jodie Foster makes a very good Nancy Hollander. Shailene Woodley is very good as her assistant. Benedict Cumberbatch is superb as Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Couch. And Tahar Rahim, is not only handsome, in a boyish way, his performance in a very difficult role is outstanding.
It is a legal drama, but little time is spent in a courtroom.

yeah, I'm 24 years too late for the party, but I finally watched this recently.....I guess I didn't seek it out when first released because I thought it'd just be another moody, dreary, "foreign" art film.......yes, I did hear of all the nudity and sex back then, but assumed it wouldn't be quite as hot as it was, it being a major movie with well-known (in Mexico) actors.....
wow, what a great flick!......fantastic documentary-style cinematography.......effective characterization that made me care (some well-intentioned movies fail at this).......clean, unpretentious, straight-forward storytelling (US directors and producers could learn a thing or three).......and the voice-over narration was incredible:  weaving in entirely unrelated commentary about the culture, history, corruption of Mexico with the thoughts of the characters and even what the future will bring to a current scene.......
despite explicit sex, language, what-have-you, the movie won several awards and is just a pleasant watch.....it's currently in the Cult Classics section of Hulu and also at Netflix.....English subtitles

I finally got to see this film. Based on the buzz, it's been on my list for a long time. Visually, it is spectacular, and lots of details blew me away. I wish I owned a larger TV. Not only is the director Robert Eggers handsome, he is an extremely detail-oriented talent. Impressive. The casting is superb. Lily-Rose Depp, whom I've never seen before, was perfect in this role. She is so strong on-screen visually, she eats it up. Her acting is superb. Nicholas Hoult was also well cast as her love. I was surprised to see Aaron Taylor-Johnson, my heartthrob. No nude scenes in this one, but he also rips up the screen with his powerful presence. I love his look in this film. And then there's Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok. What a magnificent character and portrayal. I never would have guessed who was playing the part. But the voice and the eyes, absolutely perfect casting.
This movie has amazing talent supporting the director. The art direction, cinematography, the music, the set design, all top notch. Linda Muir and her costuming deserved the Oscar. It's a feast for the eyes. The only thing missing was more male nudity. The movie is extremely sensual, it just needed a little bit more for the gays.
