I am so thrilled that this happened, and I felt certain something like that had to be the case (too incredibly popular wherever he is). I told him that we could meet at a restaurant the next day and I would provide the check. He was ESTATIC!! I KNEW as I handed the check over (payee was blank) that I had essentially no recourse if he never met with me, but I had compassion for him because he'd told me about having a tough time growing up with a father who had abandoned the family. A couple of weeks after I supplied the check, it became obvious that he did not want to hold his end of the bargain (and clearly wasn't going to) and I knew there was nothing I could do. <-------At this point is where I'm leaving a TON of material out, but I can supplement if anyone is interested.-------> I resolved myself that I'd just helped a young man out and let it go. About five years later, I Googled his name, and I discovered a presentation he was making to a water system's Board of Directors (it was in the minutes). He'd graduated, gotten his CPA license, and I actually was very, very happy for him notwithstanding the loss of funds on my end. So, as far as I'm concerned, that was a "happy ending," and, being honest, I've thought about previously posting the whole episode to this forum, but I thought I'd be the laughing stock of the whole forum given that so many clients strenuously object to even providing a much smaller deposit for a single meeting (and I fully concur now). Seeing so many others step up on this post, however, has caused me to be willing to publish my one and only similar situation. From reading the initial post on this thread, I don't think the situation described has even the remotest possibility of having a "happy ending," so I have to agree with the sentiments expressed by others that you just have to let it go.

Sorry, I definitely didn’t read closely enough and responded as a two-way street rather than a one-way street. It would probably be better for me to refrain from trying to process anything with my brain when I can hardly keep my eyes open and keep from falling asleep even as I read because of a long (but very eventful and happy) day 😀.

That’s what I’ve done (stick with one primary regular with others hired only occasionally). Unfortunately, the New Orleans market has made doing so extremely difficult because what I’m looking for so rarely appears in New Orleans anymore. As the pandemic made its way into our lives, I did notice apparent built-up frustration for both client and provider which, in turn, did seem to spill over into an elevated level of a total lack of common courtesy from both sides. Over the last two years, however, I’ve noticed a drastic improvement in professionalism and courtesy exhibited by providers for which I’m grately appreciative. I can’t say much about fellow clients, but I do suspect there remains accumulated frustration that sometimes gets unfairly dumped on the providers. That’s just a suspicion on my part though. For me personally, all in all, I’m more happy with this hobby now than in the last 20 years. I’m not even concerned about the fact that experiencing that happiness first entails an eight-hour one-way bus ride to Austin. 😀.

He was gracious enough to let me know on Thursday that he would be in Houston this weekend, and that’s a full three hours each way shorter for me than his home base of Austin! My father would pass away only 14 years later, but I held true to what he told me, and I DID retire on March 5,1996 at the age of 33. I was not in a frat, and I am certainly not naive to the reprehensible conduct of frats that has resulted in inexcusable deaths from alcohol and other related hazing. After all, I have to sit on something.” I’m aroused just typing these words and recalling how much happiness he delivered to me in that meeting. # 5) financial responsibility is a huge +. Dimitryy and I visited before he left one of our meetings while watching CNBC as the DJIA broke through 40,000 last year. We own stocks in common, and Dimitryy even minimizes his overhead in travels (staying with friends, etc.) so he can maximize his ability to invest. I don’t know when he may retire, but I LOVE the fact that, when he does, he can live comfortably the remainder of his life because he was so intelligent and responsible in managing his money derived from this arena. There’s nothing worse (to me at least) than knowing you’re providing money with which a provider opts to purchase drugs. Luckily, I have come to know of drug use on a very small number of providers with whom I’ve met, but when I do, I discontinue meeting with them. Not only does it totally destroy the “mindset” I’ve outlined above (to me, there’s no “superiority” attaching to a drug user), but my own ability to hire is based on my own financial responsibility going all the way back to making $2.90/hour at McDonalds. I have no issue at all with now paying over 100 times that amount to get to live out my fantasy as outlined above, but I want no part of having the knowledge that the money is being used to feed a drug habit as I then view myself as an enabler by making the funds simply way too easy to obtain. Great question, and I know my answer is unique, but as they say, “It is what it is.”
