The trick is to find someone who actually enjoys having the book in their hands. I have some first editions by authors such as Ernest Hemingway. To hold his book with its original dust cover is to experience what he would have when his publisher handed him his first books off the press to sign.

To be totally transparent, I did keep a few of my favourites which I had bought myself. One was his book Painting as a Pastime. He wrote it about his hobby and it includes many colour plates illustrating his work. Recently the interest in Churchill’s art has rekindled and the NYT had an article which contained an error as it said only one painting dated from the WWII period, done at Marrakech. I had the evidence in the book with a picture that there was a second painting he did in Quebec during one of the two Summits at Quebec in 1943 and 1944. When I drew this to their attention I got no reply. Lesson: don’t believe everything you read in the Times.

I’m in a similar situation to Charlie. I have a smaller collection of books but they still number between 1 and 2 thousand volumes. They are in most rooms of my house, 6 out of 8. The largest collection is in my library which has floor to ceiling built in bookcases. The second largest collection is in my office on the bedroom level. The next in a lovely Georgian bookcase in my living room. By spreading them out they don’t seem so numerous. I’ve only made a half hearted effort to slim down the collection. My cousin’s son took about 90 volumes by or about Churchill, a collection I inherited from my uncle. So they went to a good home. I’ve donated a few valuable books to my old Alma mater and a professor at another university. I’ve sold a few volumes for a few thousand dollars. But I am still acquiring new books as well so progress is limited. If I ever have to downsize out of my home I will be confronted with the issue.

I’m a regular reader of the Rentmen reviews so I go on the sites of numerous providers who get many reviews simply to see what the reviews are saying. I guess they see my profile on the sites but I don’t get blocked by them. Maybe they see I am a frequent hirer so not just a window shopper. As such I might hire them someday.

10 historic landmarks that leave some visitors disappointed
Luv2play replied to samhexum's topic in The Travel Desk
I visited the leaning tower of Pisa with my boyfriend back in 1984 or so. At that time tourists were allowed to walk up to the top. It was a lot of fun and we took some great pictures having fun with the angles. -

There’s my mistake . I was referring to Turkey and have corrected the post. -

Sorry. My mistake. It was Turkey I meant, which I put in the headline. Hungary was a brain fart I had. I will correct my text. -
Katie Couric stroke scare, diagnosed with temporary amnesia
Luv2play replied to samhexum's topic in Comedy & Tragedy
I’ve never heard of such an occurrence. I once had a loss of short term memory but that was caused by a fall and a concussion where I was knocked unconscious. When I came to some minutes later I couldn’t recall where I was or anything from the last few weeks. Within hours my memory came back except for the few minutes before the fall, which I never recovered. The doctor who treated me at the hospital called it retrograde amnesia. -
*Atlantis Cruise Ship turned away in Turkey and Egypt
Luv2play replied to Luv2play's topic in The Lounge
How long ago was that? The article said the Erdogan government has recently hardened their attitudes towards gays. -
I just read that an Atlantis Cruise ship with over 1100 gay mostly from the States has been denied entry first by Turkey and then Egypt. Turkey cited moral reasons for the denial to land whereas Egypt, which was chosen as an alternative destination, gave no reason. Patti LuPone is on board and has spoken out against the actions of the Turkish authorities. The cruise has now made alternative destinations in Greece and the Balkans. This is certainly not a good development for acceptance of gays in foreign countries. Gays should individually make choices about whether they want to spend their tourist dollars in these countries that discriminate against against them.

I am so sorry to hear this news. While I never met Lucky in person, we had many exchanges in this Forum and its previous iterations, going back to HooBoy. He was always gracious and humorous in his posts which made for interesting dialogue. We will all miss him greatly. Especially old timers like myself. RIP

This reminds me of when we were kids, we would construct house of playing cards of 5 or 6 stories. Then the trick was to remove as many cards as possible and still have the structure stand. It took a steady hand and good eye for which cards could be removed safely without having the whole structure collapse. I guess that’s where the expression “house of cards” came from. Anyone else here who played that game?

Do you clean off before dipping another?
Luv2play replied to nomad's topic in Questions About Hiring
I take Doxy pep after every sexual encounter mainly because it is highly effective in preventing syphilis. Its efficacy in avoiding chlamydia is less so and gonoccocol infections even less but still substantial. So why not take it. I am not a habitual user as I only have sexual relations with escorts about once a month. I would not take Doxy Prep for that reason. Nothing is perfect in protecting oneself against STIs but one should make an effort, as I do. Also getting tested regularly helps. And being careful about who one sleeps with. I try to use my words carefully in these types of discussions. When people here say things like “ not effective” that is plainly wrong and should be called out, which is what I did. I’m not going to belabour the point as I have stated my case. -

There is no difference between ineffective and not effective. Why can’t you admit you were wrong? It was you misleading people. -

That’s not true. Doxy is less effective at preventing gonorrhea than it is for syphilis but not ineffective. -
There’s a law that sex offenders can’t change their names. Rentmen should have something similar for providers who get bad reviews. Lol
-
Not surprised.

I would settle for menage a cinq.
-
I would have to see it, which won’t happen any time soon. But I assume the throuple interact with the other two, no?
-
I wouldn’t mind having Xavier as my personal trainer fitness trainer., I find him to be cute. I had one like that 30 years ago in Montreal but he was straight, working in a gay club in the Village.
-
So 5 in all. That must be a gang bang.
-
He’s the only one who advertises. I wonder what his co husbands do for a living.
-
Is Nick the only one who escorts?

Maybe by the time they drafted the Constitution, they thought better of the wording in the Declaration guaranteeing the pursuit of happiness. After all the Declaration caused a lot of unhappiness amongst those loyal to the British Crown.
