If anything I’m probably more critical of my appearance than is realistic. And both me and my husband get complimented frequently by providers. We also don’t hire ripped guys in their 20s, so I tend to think the compliments are genuine. 
But I also think we (as men and then as gay men) put entirely too much emphasis on appearance- even when hiring. I’ve lived long enough to know that anyone can get laid. Attraction is unpredictable. It’s not just what you can see with your eyes. There’s pheromones. Depth and timbre of someone’s voice. And then there’s charm and charisma; neither of which are captured in a photo. 
One of our consistent regulars is younger than I’m generally attracted to - in his 20s - and he’s thin and somewhat athletic but he has a little tummy. I suspect he may have been overweight in his teens. But he is absolutely incredible in bed. He’s both intense and easy going. We enjoy talking to him before and after. 
So take the compliments; perhaps you’re being graded on a sliding scale. Or perhaps you’re just this guy’s type. And don’t overthink it.

Just curious how everyone feels about what they like and don't like in communication with their provider or client.
I reached out to a guy I hope to meet ina couple of weeks and he started calling me stuff like "sexy boy" and kiss and heart emojis. I am 60 and pretty average. It just screams phony to me, and turns me off, so I asked him to stop.
Is this part of the fantasy for some guys? I know most providers are acting, but that's too much, at least for me. I want a real-feeling connection,  not smoke up my ass.
What sort of things do you guys like and not like in communication?

When I started hiring I was in my 30s and reasonably attractive (I got plenty of sex for free), so I didn't think about whether the provider would be turned on or off by my appearance. However, by the time I reached my 60s, I began to wonder if the pleasure really was mutual or the provider was only going though with the act for the money, and it bothered me enough to eventually stop hiring.  It sounds like you are really self-conscious (and uncomfortable) about your own appearance, so as others here have said, it is important that you find a provider that is not going to react in a way that will ruin the experience for you by confirming your fear of rejection. And as several others here have said, the best way to insure that doesn't happen is to be completely upfront about whatever it is in your appearance you think someone would likely be turned off by, so the provider is prepared for it: weight, scars, other kinds of disfigurements, even handicaps. And as has been said here often, cleanliness is the most important issue for many providers. (BTW: don't forget to brush your teeth  and use mouthwash.) What you don't want to do is apologize for something after you meet him. If you have prepared him, and he has accepted the appointment, then relax and enjoy yourself.
Note: I don't think that sending him a photo is a good idea. He is the one auditioning for a role, not you.
