  4. Bio-musicals are incredibly tricky. How do you condense an entire life, one that’s still unfolding, mind you, into two and a half hours? It didn’t quite work for The Cher Show. The Tina Turner musical was done better by the movie. I haven’t seen MJ, but from what I’ve heard, it skips over a lot. Honestly, Mamma Mia! might be the smarter model: use an artist’s catalog to tell an original story rather than attempt a cradle-to-stage biography. If you’re going to dip into Dolly’s treasure chest (no pun intended), why not use it for a fresh narrative? A jukebox musical inspired by her spirit, rather than trying to cast the impossible. There’s only one Dolly.

  6. Not sure what this says about me, but I was really sick in bed when Glamorous came out and binged the whole thing in two days. I enjoyed it. Though, to be fair, I think that had more to do with Zane Phillips than Kim Cattrall. I credit him for my recovery. 😂
  7. The cancellation doesn’t come as a shock, in fact, I’m surprised it lasted 3 seasons. This was a real missed opportunity. The series had all the makings of a bold, emotionally rich exploration of women in midlife: nostalgia, brand recognition, and the cultural weight of Sex and the City. And yet, it never stuck the landing. Why? Because in my opinion AJLT was built on a shaky foundation from the start. Sex and the City wasn’t just about four women—it was about those four women. The chemistry, the balance, the specific alchemy of Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha. Remove one, and the whole premise collapses. No matter how many new characters were introduced, the show couldn’t patch the hole left by Kim Cattrall. Her absence was more than a casting issue—it was a narrative rupture. Then came the reinventions. Beloved characters were transformed beyond recognition, sometimes in ways that felt like overcorrections rather than organic evolution. Viewers weren’t asking for the characters to stay static—but they were asking for consistency, for truth. Instead, we got versions of them that seemed constructed by committee, with arcs that often felt hollow or forced. Let’s also talk dollars. AJLT was one of the most expensive shows on television, with the three original leads reportedly earning over $1 million per episode. That’s not a show you casually walk away from. So the official line about holding off on the announcement so everyone could enjoy the finale rings hollow. This wasn’t a creative decision. This was a quiet, respectful bow-out—because Sex and the City is still a golden goose for HBO. They knew better than to burn the bridge. And I get it. I appreciate the spin. But we all know what happened. What a shame. There was real potential here. There is still space—urgently so—for stories about women in their 50s that are smart, sexy, funny, and raw. AJLT had the platform and the audience. But ultimately, it lost the thread.

Think Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets. I’m so thoroughly scrubbed you wouldn’t find a fingerprint on me, including my own. Imagine if the gardener, Adam, singing “Bette Davis Eyes” to Seema—who literally had a patch over one eye from a fake eyelash infection—had sung instead “Bette Davis’s EYE!” Singular. Missed opportunity. And again… no one—no one—in New York dresses like them.

    Superman

    Spoiler Alert: New Superman Review (James Gunn version) I went in with high expectations… maybe too high. The film jumps straight into the action—no origin story, no buildup. Clark is already Superman, already living on Earth. All of that is explained through a somewhat clunky series of title cards in the opening. The movie leans hard into Guardians of the Galaxy-style humor, which felt out of place for the tone. Some jokes land. Most don’t. Not surprised given Gunn wrote and directed those movies. I didn’t feel it worked here. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan share decent chemistry, but Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor never gave me a reason to believe Superman was in any real danger. He came off more petulant than menacing, and his arc didn’t build to anything truly memorable. And Nathan Fillion? Completely miscast as Green Lantern. There’s a genuinely sweet moment with Clark’s adoptive parents, and an intriguing twist involving his Kryptonian lineage that adds something fresh to the mythology. Beyond that, Clark’s inner life is barely explored. For a character caught between two worlds, it all felt surprisingly surface-level. In trying to be everything—funny, epic, emotional—the film ends up being a little bit of nothing. Not terrible, just not iconic.
  23. Recently saw the musical “& Juliet” on Broadway and must confess I really enjoyed it! It’s a jukebox musical. I didn’t know many of the songs, which were evidently written by Max Martin, a prolific songwriter known for writing songs for popular boy bands. They were performed by a cast with so much heart and energy. A fun, clever, and surprisingly sweet twist on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet that left me smiling way more than I expected. Worth seeing if you want something fun and light.
  24. I actually enjoy the Fast & Furious movies, which definitely require a massive suspension of disbelief and it’s the same thing over and over again (although… those last two 🤯). I just think there’s a difference between turning your brain off for fun and feeling like the movie thinks you don’t have one. I don’t need Citizen Kane, but I do appreciate a little craft, a little care. Even chaos can have intention. But hey—the beauty of art is, it’s subjective.
