Interesting. I took him to be pretty shrewd.

I'm watching the fireworks over Sydney Harbour Bridge (and the rest of the harbour), glass of a nice red in hand.
A happy and prosperous new year to all, may it bring everything you wished for yourselves and those dear to you.

It's been five years since he passed. Sometimes I think of him and wonder what he would say about this or that. RIP.

It seems ancient history to some, but for those of us who lived through the epidemic, we can never forget the suffering and anguish of our friends who didn't make it. Let's remember them today.

+ FreshFluff got a reaction from EZEtoGRU in New Cancerguard Test
This test competes with the Grail, which has been around for a couple of years. Here is the NYT’s take on both. They are calibrated to minimize the rate of false alarma, which means they miss more actual disease too. As the article says, they are not yet good enough to compete with invasive screening like colonoscopies.
I’d call these tests a diagnostic lottery ticket, similar to full body MRIs and CTs. You’re paying $700-$1000 for a tiny chance that the test will catch something. As the article says, the tests are best for firemen and other people who are high risk for specific diseases that these tests detect.

+ FreshFluff reacted to Archangel in Any experience with Wegovy?
I had my new patient intake for Wegovy on Monday. It was a good appointment. The NP was thorough and I left with a script for Wegovy. I knew I needed a pre auth for my insurance but other colleagues with identical plans and fewer comorbidities had no issue, so I was guardedly optimistic it would be approved.
I receive a message from the weight clinic yesterday afternoon.
I was livid. I check out the app and see the
On closer examination of the visit notes, it’s clear my NP had spent an inordinate amount of time documenting this behavioral information that I shared for transparency’s sake but only included a subordinate clause about my lifetime of obesity and the myriad attempts and programs I have tried. Having read that, if that’s what submitted for the pre auth, no wonder it was denied. I could’ve predicted that based off the notes. The notes were not representative of most of the office visit. I was livid, as I said.
I call my insurance. I filed an appeal. I’m not hopeful because the NP’s as is are damning. I can’t believe she would submit that in that form if the hope was to get the pre auth approved.
I spent last night very demotivated, demoralized, and defeated. I initially had a sense of true hopelessness that made me think, “Why bother keeping on?” I got out of that…But it is yet another hurdle. And an unnecessary one. It’s the typical “did you try dieting and exercising?” trope.
I read this thing once about how the people most knowledgeable about nutrition are overweight people because we’ve been trying all our lives to make those rules work for us. But hey – we need to be enlightened so we realize we can restrict our calories and modify our lifestyle and that will solve everything right there. Simple as that! Eat less. Do more. What’s the issue?!

+ FreshFluff reacted to + Charlie in 'Crumbl Cookies' co-founder comes out as gay
I was never in the closet at work--I was a college professor--but no one I worked with actually asked whether I was gay (I think they may have taken it for granted, because I lived in the center of the city with another man). When I proposed to teach an elective class in gay literature, the department chair didn't ask about my qualifications, but he wondered whether anyone would sign up for it, so I said, "We won't know until we announce it, will we?" So we did. To my surprise, most of the students who signed up for it were straight (or claimed to be) but curious about the subject. A young woman who was a student in a previous class of mine was the only person who asked me--privately--if I were gay, so of course I said yes, and she signed up. To my relief, enough students signed up for the course to run it, and on the first day of class I expected that someone would raise a hand and ask if I were gay, but no one did. We were a couple of weeks into the class when I was explaining something, a student raised his hand and asked, "How do you know so much about that?" so I matter-of-factly replied, "Well, I'm gay myself." A few students exchanged knowing looks with one another, but no one said anything about my answer. By the end of the semester, only one student had dropped out, and the question of my orientation never arose again in class.

@josh282282 I just crossed the 10% threshold. Do I get my Ozempic rx now? 😘
Because I eat out 1-2 times a day, I’m losing about a pound a week. That’s fine with me. The weight loss may slow down further.
13 pounds to go..

The Novo Nordisk spokesperson also told Best Life that the company "cannot validate the safety or effectiveness of compounded products claiming to contain semaglutide that are not one of our own branded products. Compounded products do not have the same safety, quality and effectiveness assurances as our FDA-approved drugs and may expose patients to health risks.
