So much of what is said in this forum is about 'me, me, me'. We talk about the things we want to do, our sexual ideas, we talk about our political ideas (and defend them to the point of obsession). We focus on ourselves. We resent things that don't affirm us. And then we read @BasketBaller's latest recounting of the Plebe, the de Paul twin, and whatever else. That points us in a different direction. It elevates our souls. I feel that I know him and his boys, I rejoice in their every-day reactions and what they do. I know it's not all plain sailing but I like to think that we have their backs. I for one look forward to the next paths they take.

Thanks for the recommendations, I ended up not having time to hire anyone this trip. I've had my eye on Mike before, maybe someday.

I took DePaul twin and Irish roommate to dinner on Friday. Roommate is a really nice guy, funny and friendly, I'm not surprised he's a hit with the girls, and would be a hit with the boys if he was up for that. He's red-haired and freckled and smooth-faced, and I probably exaggerated when I said he looked 15. He looks 16. He is "cute" more than "handsome," I'd say, but with such a muscular, athletic build I guess he's more of a twunk than a twink. Twin is happy at school but divided about the girlfriend issue. He sees everyone going out and having fun, and he wants to, too. But even though he and his gf had said they wouldn't commit to a long distance thing, they seem to have kept it going.

(PS I don't think I've ever described my boys beyond saying they're tall, all three taller than me now. But I thought I owed you guys a description of the roommate... )

Today was the first home football game for the Naval Academy, and my folks and I went to see them beat Tulane (narrowly). Plebe twin has limited opportunities to leave the Yard (campus), but he was able to visit with us at halftime, and go out to dinner after the game. It's tough there but he's doing well, maybe even enjoying it! My dad is class of '69, Plebe twin is class of '21. My mom has been a Navy wife, and I a Navy dependent. But within five minutes, my son and father were talking about Midshipman life and traditions, and neither my mom nor I had a clue what they were talking about! It was kind of amazing to hear them discussing what experiences they already shared that I had never heard of, and using jargon that went over my head.

He's okay. I asked about his roommates, and he thinks they're okay. The one who's been so homesick still is, but bearing up. Both of them have struggled with sharing a room with anyone, one is an only child and the other has siblings but always had his own room. Apart from privacy issues, both of them say hearing people breathe at night freaks them out! Twin told them he thought he'd freak out NOT hearing someone breathe.

In fact I would claim that all food is American unless primarily identified with its originating culture. Spagetti is American: baked ziti not. Most chicken dishes are American except maybe coq au vin. Nachos are American: chorizo tacos less so. Etc.

I bought a Casio from Walmart a few weeks ago. It set me back $15.88. But so far the expense has been worth it as it keeps excellent time.

My Citizen Eco-Drive, which I bought several years ago, is powered NOT by motion but by light. Therefore, as long as I leave it out to absorb light, it continues to be energized. It has never lost time. I don't remember what I paid for it, but it certainly was no more than $250. However, the majority of the time I wear a $20 Casio, which also remains accurate, and has a battery that lasts a couple of years.

When I first moved to a new city I worked the afternoon shift at my new job. It would end at 11 p.m. Once evening as I was getting closer and closer to my apartment building that I lived in with my long term boyfriend I noticed police men closing off the streets. Once close enough to see our building I saw firetrucks battling a fire engulfing it. All I could think of was that my boyfriend might be in the building. I could not see him so I walked around the block and when back on my street I saw him in front of our building. I ran to him and hugged him. He explained that luckily he was having drinks with a friend of his (who also happened to be standing there) at a French restaurant nearby. After an hour or two, the Fire Department allowed us to enter the building. They gave us a couple of black garbage bags and advised us that we should put what was salvageable and able to be carried into the bags. My boyfriend and I proceeded to our apartment and as we put various clothes, etc. into the bags he turned to me and said, "This is probably not the best time to tell you but I am going to leave you. I want to live with so-and-so (who was the guy he was "having drinks" with.) To say the least I was in shock. Even worse, however, it was the middle of the night and I had no where to go so we had to go to the new boyfriend's apartment (black garbage bags in tow) to sleep until I could contact one of my friends the next day to put me up. Believe it or not I chuckle about the whole thing today.

My only big drama fight was :
BF: I am being stationed to Germany. I want you to come with me.
Me: What about DADT? How is that going to work?
BF: You can move to Germany, get a job, live off base, and I will come see you on my days off.
Me: I dont speak German.. how am I going to get a job in Germany, Im only 17.. Are you going to help me with living expenses?
BF: No. If you love me, youll do it.
Me: Im not sure if i can leave all my family and friends... that's a big commitment. What if something happens, I'll be stuck in Germany all alone. What if you get transferred to a different assignment?
BF: If you love me, you will do it. We will find a way.
Needless to say i did not go to Germany. He ended up convincing some 16 year old Filipino boy to do it. turns out he was cheating on me. bullet dodged.. but boy was he hot..

It's been my experience that English is a river that doesn't much respond to the dikes of logic folks try to impose on it, most especially when it comes to spelling.

Personally, I would use "monies" if I were writing of financial instruments/transactions and the like, but might well lean toward "moneys" as a substitute for "currencies". And, no, that doesn't make the least bit of sense, LOL, but its all a matter of preference in the first place, so why not?

MsGuy got a reaction from Mo Mason in Dog Food
Canines and humans have been living together so long (12,000 years+) that dogs have evolved that ability to digest food items commonly found in early human diets. That includes grains like wheat. For most dogs the addition of grain to their food is no problem.

However, like humans, dogs haven't been on a wheat/rye oat/etc. heavy diet for long enough that all individuals have the genes to handle glutens efficiently. Individual dogs can have most all of the same adverse reactions to glutens (wheat proteins) that some humans do.

If your dog can handle glutens, and most can, there is no reason to avoid dog chow containing wheat any more than there is for you to avoid bread if you can handle that in your diet. Gluents are a good, cheap source of protein.

If your pet doesn't do well on a wheat heavy brand of chow. try switching to one that uses rice for a filler. The proteins found in rice don't seem to cause the diseases in humans and dogs caused by those found in wheat and related grains. I've noticed that many or most of the quality brands avoid using wheat as a filler.

As for particular brands, IMHO once you reach a high quality level, more expensive does not mean better. That said, there's no accounting for taste, in dogs as much as people. Let your companion try out several good quality brands and go with whichever he seems to enjoy the best. As long as he got a good diet, you wouldn't insist on picking out the exact flavor, say, of your child's ice cream. I would think we owe at least that much choice to our pets.
