Baseball season is almost here so I’ll throw in the Cubs’ Willson Contreras.

The kid was recruited in Venezuela as a teenager, and impressed everyone who saw him in the minor leagues — so much so that when he finally got called up in 2016 he got a standing ovation before his first at-bat. That first at-bat lasted one pitch, which landed in the center field bleachers. He was on the squad that won the World Series in 2016.

Through it all he’s remained a humble kid who routinely visits children’s hospitals and such unannounced and without media.

In 2018 he made his first all-star team and managed to bring his parents from Venezuela. MLB made a video:

He’s an easy kid to root for.

The owner of a French restaurant near me in CA used to make sure he had reindeer on the menu right before Christmas and rabbit just before Easter. Perverse booger. The frog legs there were excellent.

A dive bar/pool hall in Chicago used to be known for it's O-Burger (Ostrich). It was good! But it's so low-fat it tended to be on the dry side.

Dad took occasional deer hunting trips so we'd have venison on years when he got lucky.

I've had gator in FL but it was sorta like "while you're here anyway...".

Goat is common in meat counters in latino neighborhoods. It's sort of a gamey lamb.

My local paper is relatively cheap, but i’d subscribe even if they were more expensive. There is HUGE value in having local journalists on the courthouse beat or the statehouse beat. If they’re any good, that is. Without subscribers there won’t be any reason to keep them asking awkward questions.

Our local paper is small and relies a lot on syndicated content, but it does still hit my drveway 363 days/year with local coverage.

I also subscribe to the Chicago Trib and WaPo online. (I’ve lived in both cities. Local news there is still of interest.)

    1) Follow instructions!
    2) Do the PT, and then do it more.
    3) It takes longer than doctors tell you.
    4) You'll wonder why you waited so long.

    Not a regret among them.

    Wow.

Are you suggesting that a political forum should actually mirror the way politics works in the US?

You mean it should not be organized like a little girls' tea party with cookies and little donuts and pink ribbons and Mommy and Daddy making sure that everyone smiles and only says nice things?

    Wow. What a weird idea.

Of course, in relative terms, politics in the US is quite docile. In much of the world if you are a journalist and you write something that Putin or some narco-trafficker doesn't like, you just end up with a bullet in your head. Probably we should not try that here.

So can you think of a way to harness the wisdom of our forefathers to prevent the loss of the Politics Forum?

I'm by no means married to the idea I put out there. My hope is that you and others can make it better.

Just sitting around and losing such a valuable Forum asset doesn't feel right. As I mentioned earlier, there are those who would like to see conformity, passivity and obedience become the norm.

    I'm definitely not there yet.

Years ago I was evacuated and didn’t know it. I was attending a conference in Seattle at the time and unaware of news. When the shuttle picked me up at the airport and I told him where I was headed he said “I hope it’s still there!” It was and the only damage was a layer of dust/ash because I’d left windows open.

A few years later I was evacuated three days after buying a house. It was only one night but there were fire crews bunking at the same hotel I stayed in. I contributed to fire relief in ways that will remain private.

My experiences were trivial compared to what we’re seeing today. My heart goes out to all involved!

And for anyone planning home improvement projects, wait. Your cost of building materials just skyrocketed because of material needed in SoCal, as it did after each major hurricane.

You may think these events only involves “them”, but they always involve all of us.
