You did the responsible thing to do by cancelling this appointment.  In a case like this, I might have offered to pay half the fee, but only as a deposit against a future appointment - not as a cancellation fee.
You were generous above and beyond the norm.
Clearly, apology or not, this provider is a total jerk.

Most providers would be overjoyed to be given, without even asking, half the fee, especially given that you gave him 30 hours and had Covid. When you break an appointment for Covid, you're doing a favor to both sides - which is why I would only give a token cancellation fee for that.
Unfortunately, your provider saw your generosity, took advantage of it, and tried to get away with more.
However, your lack of response (or, if he's on this board, reading your post) made him wise up (along with the prospect of losing the entire cancellation fee). Plus, by "settling" for half the fee, he could act like he's doing you a favor. Adding those sob stories about being short of money was his attempt to keep you as a customer (which luckily failed).

Interesting update.  He reached out and apologized and said he would be happy to take half the fee LOL.  He said he has had a lot of cancellations lately with COVID and Monkeypox and he has been financially stressed.
Still a really unpleasant experience - and I won't hire him again (obviously) - but - still - I was glad he apologized and I paid him the half fee.  
Thanks for validating how I handled it - I honestly have never had this happen before and wasn't sure if I violated some provider/client etiquette!

As an escort, I'd say you were generous in even offering him half.   Clearly, you're a good egg 
COVID/Monkeypox should make people a bit more understanding.  Shit happens.  It is what it is.  Unless someone has already outlayed a ton of money for the meet (airfare, excursions, a cruise, etc), I don't see how a single hour or even an overnight cancelled should piss someone off so much.
Move forward knowing you did the right thing.

I know why. It’s because they’re paying. If it’s inconvenient for you or you find their approach is inconsiderate then it’s your choice to say just ‘no’ or ignore them. Of course in saying ‘no’ you forego the earning opportunity, which is probably what is annoying.

Probably don’t enter into any detailed arrangements about a session until they have paid your deposit. Once they pay you something only then engage on discussion about arrangements etc. However, I feel that you can have the most sophisticated ‘time waster’ screening methods but somehow they still get through!
A few days ago I had a client book, for same day, with a few hours notice. He was new, and asked questions that were the usual red flags, so all the usual time waster signs were there. Regardless of these, foolishly I accepted the booking and a session was arranged. About 45 minutes before the scheduled start of the massage he texted and said he was ‘running late’ (is he a train?) and would arrive half an hour late. At that point I knew he would no show, and sure enough after I’d acknowledged his ‘running late’ message with an “ok” he ghosted me. That’s at least 2 hours of my time wasted. 
So now his number is on the naughty list. If he messages me again in future I’ll remind him of the no show and tell him where to go. I only hope that nothing bad happened to him that meant he couldn’t contact me. Most likely though is that he is indeed one of those ignorant rude people who have no regard for anyone else. There aren’t many but wow are they annoying when they do appear. 
Fortunately I had a regular client book with me for immediately after the time wasters planned session so my time wasn’t completely wasted. 
 

It’s not unreasonable at all for hobbyists to judge providers based on our likes/preferences. It’s the manner in which it’s done that’s issue. 

The OP asked for feedback on this particular provider - totally normal. What I think is unnecessary is when other hobbyists chime in -when they have no experience with the provider, and have no intention to engage them - picking apart the provider’s body, appearance AND talking down to hobbyists about our choices, about how this must be the best we can hope to get, AND THEN proceeds to go on about how sexy, hot they are. It’s just so condescending, so patronizing, and so unnecessary. 

Now if someone asks for feedback on a provider, and a hobbyist replies they’ve engaged them, and the pictures are out of date, the body is not what the pics show, etc. that’s different. 

The former is rude, the latter is informative. 

How many times have I opened a “411” thread, clicked the link, and seen a provider that’s not my type, that I don’t think is attractive? Plenty. But I don’t add a comment to the thread expressing any of that, or any faults I find with his appearance, or any judgement I have for hobbyists who go for that type. I just close the thread, and move on. That’s how this is supposed to work. 

Just my two cents. I will add a third cent - in anonymous forums when people start talking about how worldly they are, how well heeled they are, how desirable, hot, and sexy they are, my experience has been chances are, they’re none of the above.

I was on a beach in Mykonos. I’d gone there for a week’s break with a friend (who actually is a former client lol). Anyway we were walking along the beach to find some available sun beds in the gay section of the beach. I had tiny pink Aussiebums on at that point.
We find some nice beds in a convenient location to watch and be seen lol. So I lay back and check my phone for messages (I really shouldn’t take it to the beach but am sort of addicted…). There’s a WhatsApp message from a client. I’m guessing he wants to book…so I open it and it says “did I just see you walk past on Elia beach?”.  It’s from a guy I visited as an outcall about a year previously. He must have recognised me. Fortunately I remembered him (as it was an unusual visit to his house, I don’t do many outcalls). I replied “yes it’s me!, come over and say hello”. Apparently he’s with his partner just a few beds away from us. I’m open about what I do and the guy I was with knows obviously given he used to hire me but I wasn’t sure if my clients partner knew he’d hired me. He replies suggesting we meet at the waters edge as he’s going in the sea so I removed the Aussiebums (it’s naked optional) and went down to say hello. Turns out his partner does know so on the way back up after swimming I say hi to his partner too. It was a lovely encounter and I’m glad my client felt comfortable to say hello to me.
Amazing that you can be hundreds of miles away from your work area and come across clients randomly, although I guess as it’s a gay beach on Mykonos that does narrow down the odds lol. 

Met him in LA when he was visiting several years ago (pre pandemic).  I thought he was fantastic.  Body A+; personality A; trustworthiness A (e.g., I let him restrain me).  Surprised he flaked, as reported above.  Looking forward to seeing him again, next time he's in LA; but there is no set schedule.  He's visiting southern Arizona now.
