I have never been to Hong Kong but I’m now considering it for next year. Some of the advertisements on new.gayhk.com are enough to make you want to catch the next flight out.

Considering the place is in a virtual state of civil war combined with COVID I’m not surprised.

I heard Kraus sing in "The Daughter of the Regiment" with Miss Sutherland.  He was amazing - nailing all 9 high-C in the first act aria.  His voice also projected well up to the top balconies.

I remember a televised performance on TV (available on DVD unless it’s out of print!) of Lucia di Lammermoor with Kraus and Sutherland, when they were both in their mid-fifties. The Met Archives show Kraus’ last performance at the MetOpera was in 1993, also in Lucia, at about age 66!

From a locked thread submitted by @kingsley88, dated May 7, 2021:

“I just learned about Xabier Anduaga, a young Spanish tenor who seems to be up and coming. He's only 25 years old and is easy on the eyes with a beautiful voice. I hope he comes here to the USA at some point to perform at the Met or other opera houses here.”

Xavier Anduaga made his Metropolitan Opera debut April 13, 2023, and sang the role of Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore. He sang four more performances of L’Elisir culminating in the live Saturday afternoon broadcast of April 29, 2023.

My favourite restaurant in the world is in Bangkok, Le Normandie at the Mandarin Oriental. I have been there countless times and it never disappoints. Fine food, fine wine, flawless service and a beautiful ambience. The view overlooking the river is to die for. I know in Thailand we should be eating Thai but this is French cooking at its finest. You lose Brownie points if you faint when you get the bill at the end (joke) but be consoled you only live once.

Last night I attended the JDF recital at the Sydney Opera House. The 2700 seat hall was packed to capacity. When he walked onto the stage the roar from the audience was almost deafening. A large contingent of local Peruvians waved the flag of Peru and called out words of encouragement in Spanish. I should add this was an evening in which usual concert decorum went out the window.
The main body of the recital consisted of well known arias by Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi, Puccini and Gounod. He was magnificent. A showman to his fingertips.

As Marc from Cali reported for his encore he came onstage with his guitar and sang a number of Peruvian songs to the delight of the Peruvians in the audience and at times asked them to join in.

I thought this was going to be the end but how wrong I was. He returned with the pianist and sang 6 encores including Ah mes amis from Daughter of the Regiment (with its 8 high C’s), La Donna Mobile, Nesun Dorma and Granada. After each number the audience reacted with increasing levels of delirium.
It would be the understatement of the century to say that this was a recital like no other.

In a word yes. JDF is drifting beyond the bel canto repertoire into for example some Verdi roles but I doubt he would ever sing Calaf in a full performance. However that one aria in a recital he coped very well.

In the middle of the second act of Tannhauser at the Metropolitan Opera last night, climate activists disrupted the performance by lowering a banner from the top balcony seating and yelling. The performance was stopped for a bit less than half an hour while the activists were ejected by police! Afterward, the performance picked up where it was interrupted and continued to the end of the opera!
