Cannibis can be helpful in reducing arthritic inflammation.

For that, one needs a doctor's approval; I don't know what his position is. I do know that in my county there is no place that sells medical marijuana.

For my relative, we are looking at the handicapped bath. You open the door on the side and scoot in. Still looking-it is tough.

I have a disabled upstairs neighbor and the landlord awhile back replaced the bath/shower combo with just a shower.

Always having a phone or something like LifeAlert with you, even in the shower, is wise when you live alone. An acquaintance of mine recently was stuck in her bathtub for almost three days when she was too weak to get out because of a bladder infection. A neighbor finally investigated when he noticed that her newspapers hadn't been taken in. An elderly friend of mine lay on his kitchen floor for 36 hours because he was too weak to get to a phone.

There are a variety of programs which work well if you have Medicare and Medicaid. PACE Programs for AllInclusive Care for the Elderly. You need to be 55 or older and have medical needs which would qualify you for a nursing home. In such a program all your medical needs are covered. The program I work with has a Day Center, the Center has a Clinic, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Recreational Therapy, Psychiatric and Podiatric Services. The facility supplies all medically related transportation and home health aides to help with bathing, cleaning, cooking, food shopping as well as having available social service workers to help with working your way through the medical paper maze.

There are many programs out there. Do not resign yourself to a skilled nursing facility when there are many other options including many that will keep you in your home.

Thank-you! I greatly appreciate the advice.

I did check around for non emergency medical transport. I found one that charges $45 for a round trip and they will provide a wheelchair for me.

Again, I don't know what state you are in, but a number of states have publicly funded paratransit systems for the disabled, where if you are within a certain distance of a mass transit stop, and your destination is as well, they will take you door to door for basically whatever the fare would be on the bus or train(and I suspect less sometimes). It's not always convenient if you are in a suburb where the buses all stop at 6 or 7 pm, but it's a lot better than $40 a pop. Look on your local bus or train line's website and see if they have a link on handicapped options.

The private services can be a good option for special events at off-schedule times, but do look and make sure you are checking out the lower cost options as well.

In general, I agree that you should usually attempt to delay moving to one as long as possible. But if you know it's in the cards, there can be something to be said for making the decision while it is still your decision and you can pick where you go rather than have it decided for you.

There's also the socialization issue.

My sister's 100-year-old roommate has this to say about the nursing home: "Well it's not fancy, but I tell you what, it beats sitting alone in an empty house all day." If the facility has a large enough population, there is usually a critical mass of relatively "with-it" residents and one might be able to have a bit more of a social life than one would if they were essentially a shut=in.

There is door-to-door bus service in my community. One has to call a day in advance. The problem is I can not walk to the curb nor would I be able to step up into the bus.

Yeah many towns have that, but there may be something more accessible at the state level. My sister is in a wheelchair and the NJ paratransit system operates buses with wheelchair lifts. There's a town bus that she can't use because it's not accessible. And there's a county one that she can but is only for medical appointments and has somewhat more restricted hours.

Also, with the NJ system, a companion/personal aide can ride with her for free.

Just want to say hugs. My relative's son bailed on her after taking her money. She was very helpful when I had my kids and so am really considering moving to my house. Have an extra room anyway. Will have to retrofit some to fit handicapped needs, but researching medicare and other issues. Kinda sad when we don't have control of our body or senses anymore.

That would be very kind to do.

Well when I had my kids through scientific means , she embraced them whole heartedly and never asked a single question, despite being deeply religious/conservative. I don't know if I could have gotten through those initial stages. The kids are close -almost a surrogate mother. So just makes sense.

You won't know until you ask. Mine was able to narrow it down a specific variety and advised on the risk/benefits. We just passed recreational use last year in Nevada and so I can just go to a dispensary.

I get CBD capsules with a 1 to 5 ratio CBT to THC. Doctor had advised that for what ever reason there needs to be a little THC to make the CBT effective. I've found that it relieves the pain immediately and stays gone for about a day. I tend to take one Thursday night for my weekend.

Thinking about one of those vapor pens but too happy with the capsules to switch over right now.

and Yes I've been mistaken for another gender.

I have never been mistaken for another gender but I have been mistaken for another species.

I've never smoked anything not even tobacco. I wonder if they make diabetic marijuana brownies?

Is this conservator someone you picked or someone who was assigned to you? Do you have any family at all to help make the decisions? I've seen a couple of family members go through this sort of thing in a, well, sub-optimal fashion because they just reacted after the fact. Do try to make sure that whoever is assisting you is experienced at working the system.

And push for physical therapy. You may not regain the ability to drive but you do want to maximize what mobility you can maintain. Even if you still need help, your quality of life will be much better.

Also consider occupational therapy, which is a bit ofva

I really need to look into the question of where NJ stands on medical marijuana now that Christie is no longer governor. It was authorized by statute but his administration was engaged in slow walking implementation.

Also consider occupational therapy, which despite the name is much more about function than work, if your upper body (neck, shoulders, arms, hands, wrists) is affected. I have lower and upper body issues, and occupational therapy was more helpful for the upper body issues than physical therapy ever was. I even had a physical therapist do work that screwed me up so badly I had to return to occupational therapy for relief.

This would be the county conservator. She was gone on Thursday and Friday. I called this morning (Monday) but she was out of the office. I'm waiting for her to call me back.

I have no family or friends who can help. Family because of distance and my friends have moved, died, or worse off than I am.

How close are the family relatives? like do you have siblings who are still working?

Sometimes large companies have employee assistance plans in their benefits that will do things like provide a consultation with someone who can help formulate a care plan. Like my sister's employer sent a retired nurse caseworker out to interview my other sister and work up a report outlining the options. At that point what we needed to do didn't require further assistance, but they would have also helped with coordination and getting through the red tape.

So few people use these benefits that often they are pretty fast and loose with what they consider a close enough relative to provide the benefits. My brother got assistance for his former mother-in-law(his wife passed away a few years ago).

If you have a relative with such a benefit, they might only need to make a phone call and the rest is the agency working with you.

If you have an option other than the county person, I would suggest you consider it, especially if you have assets they might have their eye on. You might be surprised at how long you can put off going to an institution if you make full use of what is available. If that's what you want. I'm only pushing back on you here because it seems from your tone you may be simply resigning yourself to things while not necessarily aware of all the options( which is by no means your fault, MOST people know very little about this).
