2-3 hours

That is about the right amount of time for a first time hire when I don't know how things will go. It's also about the limit of how long I can sit still in one place and also a practical duration for an evening if there is no dinner or other activity planned.

That said, there are some first-meeting guys I've engaged for 2 hours and wish I had 20.

If I can afford two hours or an overnight, I do that. If not, I will hire for an hour. When I hire for an hour, I have usually met the person before and I know that they will not be setting an alarm clock to get out the door.
