I would not be so sure. Of course @funguy or other friends who actually know about this may correct me, but I understand the you can be an asymptomatic carrier of any virus. :(

I get that and it was pointed out to @adventurous old guy when he raised the question. I'm still trying to wrap my head around what someone who thinks, assumes or knows they have avoided this particular virus is willing to do to stay that way. (You can't have a rational discussion about HSV1 when you lump it together with serious and potentially life-threatening viruses that most people do not have.) Because of its prevalence and the fact that you can't just trust what someone says, I can't see any real way to protect yourself other than giving up kissing all together.

As Oliver said, viral lesions can be shed even when there is no discernible lesion. Low amount of virus but nonetheless possible.

As to carrier states, yes, many people can be carriers (without being infected themselves) and can spread the virus.

A virus as ubiquitous as HSV1 doesn't get to this point without asymptomatic people spreading it.

If everyone thought about the risk of HSV1 when kissing ANYONE, escort, client, brother, sister, and on down the line, there would be no kissing done, period!

All we can do is not kiss when there is an obvious lesion and hope the carrier will say something if he/she is in the midst of the "aura" described above.

I add in titers for HSV1 and 2 when i have blood work done even tho I have never had any symptoms of each.

A naive question on my part, and I have done a perfunctory search online. Is HSV1 infectious all the time or only when there are lesions? If the latter, then the obligation for disclosure is rather more specific.

HSV-1 and HSV-2 are for life. Once you're infected, they're always there and the virus is always being produced, but your body's immune system has reached a point where it can mostly manage it so long as you aren't under too much stress. That's possibly why sores appear, an infected patient's immune system is overly stressed.

As @OliverSaks said, a person with HSV-1 or HSV-2 shouldn't assume they're only contagious when they have sores. Microscopic sores are nearly always there, just not visible to the eye, and producing virus particles for transmission. This is part of the reason why such a large percentage of the population is infected.

I'm curious, why? Given the false positive rates for the tests, why get tested if you've never had symptoms? Do you suspect you're an asymptomatic carrier?

I have had "cold sores" in the past. There are many viruses which can cause "cold sores" so I have made sure they are NOT HSV. And I have made sure to get both IgG and IgM (checking exposure and infection).

There are some key words in the OP that should be of concern here.

I think the puzzle can be figured out.

"Safe sex practices: ask me"

Let's play the PrEP roulette!

where's Draker when we need him??!!

A friend of mine from Baltimore recommended him to me and told me he nicknamed Draker "condom Nazi"... I email him and said: "A friend of mine referred me to you, he calls you the condom Nazi" and he went ballistic calling me a stalker... Damn, was that moody or lost in translation?

Your health, your choice. The only thing you can do is take care yourself. It's hard to know the status of the escort. But you could do as much as you can to protect yourself.

Before I hire an escort, I always do some search.

1) Check if the escort has porn background, has done bareback, gang bang or uses drugs.

2) Check if the escort has criminal records or bad customer reviews.

3) Make sure I am healthy and protected. No open sore in the mouth, no wound or scratch on my skin.

When I meet the escort,

1) I never bottom bareback for the escort. Only condom sex if I bottom.

2) no ass to mouth action to avoid hepatitis.

3) no cum eating.

If you follow what I said, you are pretty much very safe. Just my 2 cents.

Hepatitis vaccines are much more fun than avoiding ass to mouth...

I never trust my memory, but what I recall is two shots with 6 months in between.

Can't remember which is A and B

Five (5) shots total

Day 1 - two shots

One month later - one shot (can't remember which one)

Five months after that (total of six months later) - one shot (the other one--now done)

One month after that (total of seven months later) - one shot (now completely done)

Or to put it another way:

May 1 - 2 shots

June 1 - 1 shot

Nov 1 - 1 shot

Dec 1 - 1 shot

That's how it worked for me in 2016.
