On 3/30/2017 at 8:37 AM, Gvtire said: Big Eden As soon as I saw the opening credits with such 1980s TV luminaries as Corrine Bohrer, George Coe, Nan Martin, Arye Gross, and Tim (don't call me Tooth) DeKay, I knew I was going to see a nice, solid Hallmark or Lifetime movie which made it appropriate to watch on YouTube since they now have as many ad breaks as network TV (although shorter). As I often do on YouTube I watched it at 1.25X, which cuts 20% off the runtime without affecting the ability to follow the dialogue one bit. I'm just curious... when you check the time remaining every five minutes for the last 45 minutes of a movie, that's a good thing, right? samhexum Posted February 17 Posted February 17 At the end of the day calls itself a comedy but it really isn't one. It's a rather earnest film about a professor at a Christian college who infiltrates an LGBTQ+ support group for nefarious purposes but learns some life lessons along the way. Not THOSE kind of lessons... he doesn't realize he's gay. For most of the film I wasn't particularly impressed, thinking it was too cliched and simplistic but I wound up enjoying it well enough... of course I watched it at 1.25 X speed.

samhexum Posted February 17 Posted February 17 (edited) In the 2016 movie Fair Haven, 19 year old pianist James, just home from months of Christian conversion therapy with the well-preserved remnants of Gregory Harrison, tries to fight his feelings for ex-boyfriend Charlie, all the while wishing his dad still looked like Luke Duke, rather than the what's left of Tom Wopat. samhexum Posted February 18 Posted February 18 I'm not one to watch many movies but with many network shows on hiatus and the NBA just having had its all-star weekend (which bores the $&@? out of me) I've been on a gay romance flick kick. In ESTEROS, a man agrees to let his girlfriend's makeup artist friend turn them into zombies for a costume party. Of course the friend is the boy he was in love with when he was 13. The movie takes place in two timelines, telling the story of then and now. It's not spectacular but it passed the time (especially at 1.25X).

When he falls in love with a man named Mike his parents trick him into visiting their old village where they have set up an arranged marriage with a childhood friend. It's sad but I liked it. The movie is on Prime if you have it. It is on YouTube as well but you'll have to sit through so many ad breaks you'll rather be forced into an arranged marriage than sit through even one more. samhexum Posted February 22 Posted February 22 (edited) JUST FRIENDS... 2019... A Syrian man meets a Dutch guy when he gets a job cleaning his grandma's house. On Prime... I enjoyed it. Both are attractive... not that I'm shallow enough to care about that sort of thing, of course. A REVIEW I FOUND: Dutch actors Majd Mardo and Josha Stradowski deliver strong, remarkable performances as the male leads Yad and Joris respectively. Veteran actress Jenny Arean as the grandmother is wonderful in every scene that she is in. Joris (Josha StradowskI) is trying to come to terms with his broken family relationships on the tenth anniversary of his father’s death when he meets the free-spirited, Yad, who is a windsurfing instructor. Also dealing with family issues, Yad has returned home to Holland after living on his own. Joris and Yad spark an instant connection and decide they want to be more than “just friends,” to quote the title, but fear their families could threaten their relationship, especially their overbearing mothers. Throughout the movie, it is neat to watch Joris evolve from an introvert to more of an extrovert thanks to the help of Yad. This seductive and flirty romantic comedy goes beyond the usual young LGBTQ love story with the family dynamics and values that are illustrated in the film. Overall, “Just Friends” is a movie with a lot of heart to it. Stradowski, Mardo, and Arean give terrific performances and the rest of the cast is memorable. Compliments to Annemarie van de Mond for directing such a poignant film, and to Henk Burger for his solid screenplay. “Just Friends” garners two giant thumbs up. Well done. samhexum Posted March 1 Posted March 1 (edited) AN ALMOST ORDINARY SUMMER (2019) Two Italian men of a certain age plan to marry in three weeks... if they can overcome their disapproving families' attempts to sabotage the situation. Not bad at all. It was nice to see an older gay love story for once... and the disapproving older son looks a bit like Ricky Martin, so that was a little treat. I don't know if it's on any streaming service. I watched it on YouTube at 1.25X speed, which negated the extra time added by the ads. samhexum Posted March 1 Posted March 1 (edited) Gone but not forgotten is an amateurish, badly acted 2003 movie that explores the "mystery" of what really happened to amnesiac hospital patient Mark who was rescued by Drew, the dorky Forest Ranger. The movie would've been at least a little bit better if the part of Drew had been played by Joel Bryant, who played his religious older brother (and boss) Paul. He has beautiful eyes. This movie is best forgotten. I only got through it because I had it on in the background as I did some chores. Edited March 1 by samhexum to add the picture of the hunky actor holding his crotch
samhexum Posted March 7 Posted March 7 (edited) Shy Argentinian teen Lorenzo falls for Caito, the somewhat older troublemaking son of his dad's friend, who was sent away after crashing a motorcycle and critically injuring his half brother. (at least that's the official story) It's sweet the way Lorenzo tries to take care of Caito while struggling to come to terms with his feelings (even after his loving and very pretty mom lets him know he can talk to her). It's sad and there isn't a happy ending but I liked it and there's nothing physical between them so you don't feel like a pedophile watching it. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Shy Argentinian teen Marcos' life is falling apart. His loving dad kills himself after a setback at their rural farm, then he is beaten up by three locals after attending a party dressed as a girl. He is left to walk home in the dark and when he gets home in the morning his mom burns all his girlie stuff. He, his older brother, and the mother try to keep the farm going but can't. It's suggested they move into new housing being built in town, so they check it out and like what they see only to find out they can't get the necessary credit. One thing finally seems to be going right when Marcos connects with Fede, a guy in town. But then he invites Fede over to meet mom and bro, telling him they're okay with the situation, then when they aren't, Fede storms off and refuses to answer Marcos' calls. Finally the day comes when they are to be evicted from the farm. Care to guess whether they have a fairytale ending? I can recommend the first film in this post despite it being sad, but MARILYN should only be watched with a stiff drink in one hand and a shotgun in the other, with the Bee Gees' I started a joke playing in the background. Edited March 7 by samhexum because he was in the midst of a long, sleepless night
samhexum Posted March 8 Posted March 8 FOUR MOONS explores being gay at four different ages in Mexico City. A young boy exposed to the world after making a move on his first crush, two teens who meet again in high school after being best friends when they were eight, a man who is unhappy in his ten year relationship, and a sick old man hiding his desires from his wife and daughters all go through stuff in this fairly engrossing flick. It ain't a masterpiece but it was worth watching all the way through, even on the night we spring forward and lose an hour of sleep. BSR and thomas 1 1
