Food, no place better on earth

Drink, no place better

Bars, burbon street, gets old

Gay bars, so so. oz use to have some good dancers, but not as good now

Escorts--worst place on earth, unless you, live in a small city

As far as the city itself, I love it

Odd isn't it? I haven't been into bars for, oh 25 years. Seattle has no strip clubs either--nothing like that. Not the best collection of local escorts either (some exceptions.) We do get drop-ins. In NOLA, I think I can make do. I get the impression that people love the city or hate it--either they get it or they don't. Thanks for your input.

My experience is that most people love it, especially first visit. Food, music, architecture, laissez-faire, ambience, hospitable, go cups(Ha). Majority of visitors prob not interested in the gay escort scene.

Imagine being a high roller with lots of disposible cash and no cares in the world. Now place that high roller in New Orleans and watch him turn to antidepressants or the next major flight out of town. The city is depressing as far as the gay scene in general. The gay scene is racially self segregated (like most major cities I suppose). And quality escorts that look like they're not abusing meth are far and few. And be wary of the bars in the French Quarter. Seedy characters are a plenty in those traps.

Good luck.

Yes, as with any big city bar scene, you have to be very careful in certain bars at certain times of the day. Reasonable adults know common sense precautions to take and what to avoid if possible (including the well-known caveat of not drinking a drink that you don't see poured) But to me New Orleans would not be New Orleans without some of the seedy stuff. And if you're into straight trade (some say "rough trade"), nola has a few bars that are some of the easiest places to find an increasingly rare species: straight guys with nice bodies, nice you name it who are willing to be your date and likely more. But of course you have to endure some fairly rough scenes and be vigilant about opportunistic hangers on.

I survived NYC between 1972 and 1992, so I have some street smarts and am familiar with seedy. These days I don't go to bars or participate in the "gay scene" even here in Seattle. Got all that out of my system during my 20 years in Manhattan. I appreciate the info on NOLA.

What would be some of the "rough trade" bars? I like the straight nice body guys but never see them in gay bars.

I've always felt New Orleans was a dump. IMHO Katrina didn't wash away ENOUGH.

And that's coming from someone who LOVED the East Village in the pre-Giuliani era.

Although, I admit I have enjoyed coffee and beignets at Café du Monde at the crack of dawn....

Once the sun comes up though....it quickly returns to being not much more than Mississippi River swampland.

And every gay man I've met in a bar there....was more than a little "off"....it's a strange place....and not in a good way.

There is a grit to our fair city, but we New Orleans' natives may disagree a bit on characterizing our city as a dump. Get out of the Quarter - no one from NOLA really ever goes to the Vieux Carre except for the odd special occasion - sort of like visiting a zoo to see drunk tourist. Visit the Faubourg Marigny, along some of the side streets to Frenchman Street you will find some of the best jazz clubs in the world. Some of the best restaurants in the US are in the Lower Garden district and two or three have opened in the Warehouse District have appeared in a couple of national food magazines. Take the street car to Audubon Park and then take a stroll through Tulane on a nice sunny day and take in all the gorgeous boys..... NOLA has a lot to offer. Escorts, not so much. Grindr, however......

Are there any that people would recommend in New Orleans?

I can't recommend New Orleans for its escort scene, but it's a great city for food, music, history, culture and fun. I've lived here for about 15 years, and there are definitely people who "get it" and fall head-over-heals for New Orleans' charm, and others who just "don't get it."

one of the great cities of the US.....I hope I'm one of the ones who "gets" it, as @corndog hopes for!......

yeah, wander the French Quarter and see what there is to see there, just to say you did, then get yourself off the tourist track......

fairly recently took a very good walking tour organized, I think?, out of a visitor center/book store/gift shop ??? in the historic Pontalba Apartments building.....the very savvy and hip guide said (to the entire group) do NOT go to Cafe du Monde and, instead, suggested an entirely local, small cafe for coffee and sweets around the corner and up the street (he did not get a commission).....though it was in the heart of the FQ, I even spied a few locals in the joint!.....later, walking by the Cafe du Monde, I was relieved I didn't brave the line of starry-eyed tourists and harried staff.....even the "secret" side window for ordering was jammed....the guide also cautioned us on the correct way to pronounce Chartres, Esplanade, and "praline" and, of course, suggested the best spot to buy some

visitors should not expect a pristine, wealthy, clean, utterly charming experience in NOLA.....I like to experience the real thing when I travel and the often poorly-maintained roads, the sometimes confusing intersections and signage, the average airport, and the general state of "faded grandeur" are just what I like about NOLA....

I deliberately walked out of the "safety" of the FQ and into the Marigny and Treme-Lafitte neighborhoods one time.....instant reality check....no silly bars or hawkers, no home tours with "period furniture" reproductions, only real people and houses.....I heard some lively jazz music in the distance a few blocks and wandered toward it....boom! one of those classic NOLA funerals like we only see in the movies....nice!......

drive thru the Lower Ninth Ward.......walk a nice path in City Park to Lake Pontchartrain (wow, that's an ocean)......

turn right when the guidebook says left

So, I lucked out apparently, and did just have a really great escort experience in New Orleans with AndreNola. And contrary to some of the other threads, he did not seem to be a meth user. (I checked his teeth and his entire body. No telltale signs of meth abuse. haha)

So if anyone is down in New Orleans, I recommend looking him up and messaging me if you want details.

Exactly, he's just slim!

Being skinny doesn't mean a guy is a meth user.

I suppose I take it a little personally when people trash-talk New Orleans; it’s been my home for over 40 years. I must iterate what others have said: if you come here and never leave the Quarter, then you really have a very narrow view on which to judge the city.

I agree that the escort scene is surprisingly bleak here. When I was much younger (back before the internet, in what Bambi Lake called “the golden age of hustlers”) there were plenty of eager guys here to pass some time with; I remember a beautiful kid Donnie with almond-shaped eyes and a dragon tattoo that coiled around his torso and down one leg. But that was a long time ago, and things have definitely changed. AIDS was a factor, and so was the oil bust, and so was Katrina. My own two cents is that nowadays there’s simply not the clientele to support a good escort scene; New Orleans proper is actually quite small, and it’s certainly not wealthy. So now If I’m going to hire, I prefer to do it with well-known, top-notch guys rather than take a chance on something less than stellar, and that means going out-of-town.

That said, it has become my personal mission to nag, tempt, cajole, coerce, seduce and otherwise convince Tristan Baldwin to get his fine self down to New Orleans at least once. He’s shown me around both Boston and L.A., and I am determined to return the favor.

There is a possibility I may be moving from Seattle to New Orleans sometime in the next two years, both for the lower cost of living and to be with family. I am 68 and retired. Lived in Manhattan for 20 years, Laguna Beach for 10, and am now in a one bedroom apt in a nicer section of Everett, about 20 miles north of Seattle. I have never been to NOLA and had never before considered living there. The various neighborhoods of that city are a mystery to me, but I am doing research now. I am thinking about some of the closer suburbs as potentially a good fit for me at this stage of my life. Was thinking of visiting for the first time this coming summer so I can experience the climate at its worst. Basically, I will be trying to scope out a safe neighborhood where I can find an affordable, dog friendly one bedroom with a WD and a dishwasher and a place to park a car. If you have any tips or suggestions, I would be grateful.

I've been puzzled as to why NO has so few companions given the large numbers of tourists who visit and it's wonderfully indulgent and decadent atmosphere.

Is there really a shortage of clientele ? Or are the clientele the party, beer-drinking, throwing-up-in-the-gutter type of tourists (or, "mom and dad" as I call them).

You would think that with a large number of younger guys working in restaurants and bars with flexible schedules that there would be plenty of opportunities.

My experience is only as a tourist but I did not find the cost of living to be anything positive at all. Maybe that's just because of where I stay and play. Most definitely visit before you move and visit in the summer as you say... the heat and humidity will be an eye opener. To practice, you can hang out in a steam room for a week or two ;). I do like the area near Tulane and Loyola along St Charles and over by the Audubon Park and Zoo, myself.
