Was just in Portland for an overnight last Sunday. Had no issues with safety going to Stag and Silverado. I stuck to the main avenues and public transportation routes, not the side streets. This is something I would do in any city when traveling.

Went to a co-workers wedding a few years back and the Groom's "Uncle Jimmy" brought an out of town provider as his date. I had met the provider previously and politely said hello while we both were getting a drink at the bar. Unexpected yes, but not awkward at all for me. For the wedding party... well that was a slightly different story.

if you search for Minneapolis you'll get a few threads that might be helpful. Lot's of providers where "your mileage may vary" as they say. Can't give any recommendations as I am local to MSP and only meet up when travelling.
