Just caught some The Rocketeer on TV this afternoon. It reminds me just how good looking Billy Campbell was when he was young. I think he is one actor who hasn't aged that well. Hate to say it, but I think he can benefit from putting on 10-15lbs now. John Travolta, on the other hand, should lose 30lbs.

For some reason this makes me think of a New Yorker cartoon of several gruff grim-faced old businessmen sitting around their club, one of them saying:

"They say Nixon can't win because he's not a lovable man. Well, are you a lovable man? Am I a lovable man?"

Or we could go with actors whose middle name is Dorian Gray...they don't seem to age:

Lets be kind. I've often thought how hard it must be for film actors to see themselves in films they made 20 or 30 years ago at the peak of perfection, looking absolutely fabulous in make up and wonderful costumes, saying and doing wonderful things..... And then looking in the mirror. Perhaps, they don't look at their old films much. It makes me think of the great Gloria Swanson playing silent film star Norma Desmond in Wilder's Sunset Boulevard... "We didn't need words. We had faces."

I think Billy Campbell is still hot, IMO.

There is a M*A*S*H* episode in which BJ Hunnicutt is complaining to his fellows that he misses his family and his wife has to take a job to feed the kids and he has missed several birthdays, Margaret "Hotlips" tells him in no uncertain terms: Maybe you have the most too lose, but that is only because you have the most to begin with. Mr. Kilmer might fall into that category.

Rob Lowe is the ultimate Dorian Gray. How that man still looks so young is beyond me. I know he keeps himself in great shape, which is certainly a bit part of it, but his face doesn't appear to have aged very much, either. Unless he's got a more skilled plastic surgeon than the rest of Hollywood he doesn't seem to have had much, if any, "work" done.

It is OK to make fun of the male actors, but aging is far worse, far more cruel to actresses. When I think of the women that I admired as a teenager, most of them are total WRECKS by the time they hit 35-4O. The passage of time is incredibly cruel to the female body - in spite of the incredible advances of plastic surgery. Sagging tits, stretch marks, wrinkles, and the most cruel of them all - weight gain. I always was a bit of a leg man. But what weight gain, cellulitis and varicose veins do to the female body, to the legs in particular, sadly, is beyond description.
