It depends. There are Japanese movies set in the Tokugawa/Edo period and earlier with characters wearing man buns who look just fine, thank you. Toshiro Mifune as the bandit Tajomaru in the movie Rashomon is an example.

There's also this video, which I posted the last time this subject came up, in which Tablo, leader of K-hiphop group Epik High, rocks glasses and a man bun during an award ceremony and performance of a song about an obsessive fan.

Check out the song's MV as well (search for "fan epik high" on YouTube); although there is no mutilation, it's about as twisted as the plot to Stephen King's novel Misery.

 

Btw, Epik High is appearing at Coachella later this month.

I suspect Tablo would be surprised and delighted at being called conventionally beautiful rather than dorky and cute. For my money, DJ Tukutz is the most conventionally beautiful member of Epik High. Mithra Jin would appeal to those who like bearish types.

 

Alas, Tablo's hair is no longer long enough for a man bun.

I can't take a man seriously when he's tied his hair up in a man bun, braid, or top knot.
