If people keep handing me setup lines, I'll keep knocking 'em out of the park. Like a poor friend of mine who asked me what his initials -- which happen to be DS -- stand for, and I told him "dipshit." He invited that one.

And is he STILL your friend ?

Ladies and gentlemen, I don't know why some of you are confused about this thread. It's very straight forward. Let me summarize... .

It started with a little discord and drama, then we went into a happy place, then we detoured into Oxford commas, punctuation (a natural detour), more apologies about being alive and someone overdosing on makeup. Michael Jackson danced his way in. Then a message from our sponsor, more guilt, something about middle school girls (have no clue where that came from), the cast of Dynasty joined in. A couple bears wanted in, commas were finally straightened out by the resident genius, even someone likes 'pretty' commas ( how sweet is that). Then we swerved into Manatees and spiders (huge spiders, I might add), and Beethoven made a quick appearance. There was some kissy, kissy and of course pizza was introduced (we all know who that was. haha). Kittens and salmon slipped in...not sure who was eating who. President Bush and Chaucer are waiting in the wings... stage right, of course.

See???? Just your basic thread.

A little discord and drama? HA!!!:p

Joanie, Barb, Lisa, Miranda, Kayla, Lindsay, Manuela, and Rosie (all middle-school girls) listed here by a serial comma user with prejudice!!!

I will admit that in certain cases 'who' sounds better. But not in in this case-at least not to me...

[Then follows a most "concise" grammar lesson from Green Lantern, er, I mean, Gman!]

including:

(Copulative Verb aka Linking Verb)

Exeunt

Heh! Heh! You gave me a Beavis & Butthead giggle moment when you wrote Copulative!!!as in, "He said COPULATIVE. Heh! Heh! Heh!" (took me back to middle school, meself!):D

I worry about this friend. I'm assuming he is an adult. So he's had these initials his entire life, and he still has to ask other people what they stand for? Were his parents keeping it a secret and passed on before they could tell him?

I would have gone with dick sucker, but that is just me unless your friend was Bernie Sanders and then I would have chosen Democratic Socialist.

My initials are GAG. What can you give me with that?

Good As Gold... :)

Goes And Goes!

Get A Grip :p (JK!)

GAG: Glycinoaminoglycan

Any of a group of unbranched polysaccharides with high molecular weight that contain aminosugars and often are attached to or form complexes with proteins. (From my biochemistry days!)

Sorry, but as QTR noted Mr. Smith took all the good ones!

Y'all have reminded me of an old memory. My oldest cousin's married surname starts with a G. When she was pregnant with her 1st child (said 'child' is just about to be 36 and is a father of two with one on the way), her youngest brother and I, ages 16 and 18 respectively, sat around trying to make up funny first and middle names that would give a funny word as initials-for example Saul Adam G (their last name)-SAG, Gary Alphonse G-GAG, Bradley Aaron G-BAG, and etc.

While you guys are in grammar mode...

He did it like I. vs. He did it like me.

It is I. vs. It is me.

If it were I. vs. If it was me.

Discuss! And do use the words predicate and nominative as often as possible! Thanks! Oh! And copulative as well!!!!

Why did you change the verb and pronoun If it were I vs If it 'were me'? I think the use of were instead of was, means that the proposition is impossible i.e. 'If I were God' would be correct whereas 'If I was God ' would be incorrect. I stand to be corrected.

It was purposely chosen so as to stimulate some lighthearted and lively discussion on the matter, and you just did so! Perhaps others can chime in regarding their opinions regarding what is considered acceptable and proper.

I saw this item in the local newspaper under the caption "Today's Thought"

"Three things in human life are important:

The first is to be kind; the second is to be kind;

and the third is to be kind."

-Henry James

(1843-1916)
