Apples and oranges. Male circumcision is such a core part of the Jewish tradition, its hard to imagine there are lots of uncircumcised Jewish guys out there. I'm not saying they don't exist....but likely its a very very small minority probably in unusual or special circumstances. I bet the vast majority of traditional Jewish people would not accept an un-circumcised Jewish male as being truly Jewish baring any special circumstances. Anyway, it would be an interesting topic for another thread....Can an uncircumcised male be seen as being truly Jewish??

You're right, this isn't the place to educate people on Judaism. Without meaning to sound ugly what is called being Jewish in this thread is like a caricature. If anyone here is Jewish and wants to know just ask your Rabbi. As for being unusual it depends on how you view the hundreds of thousands of Jews from the old Soviet Union, the Sephardi Jews after the Inquisition and many more. We may not be American Jews but we sure as hell are Jews. By the way, FYI, if a non-circumcised Jew decides to become observant when he is older almost every Rabbi will allow a symbolic circumcision which is just taking a drop of blood from the foreskin.

Absolutely. According to Halachic law, one is Jewish if his/her mother is Jewish, period. (The computer science people here there might like the recursive definition.) You can convert to Christianity or make out with a witch at a Satanic orgy, but you're still Jewish.

 

Per the Eagles, you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave. Chabad, an Orthodox Jewish organization, gave the same answer.

Soviet Union=special circumstances per my original post. As far as my beliefs being a "caricature", an estimated 95-97% of the worlds men who consider themselves to be Jewish are circumcised. If one removes the Soviet Jewish men (special circumstance) from the equation, it would be a higher number thus proving my point that comparing the numer of uncircumcised men who consider themselves Jewish (circa 3% of the total) to the percentage of Christians that swear (probably 95% of the total) to be like comparing apples to oranges. The vast majority of Jewish males are circumcised. I do accept Freshfluff's contributions to this thread as she is a highly trusted source. Therefore I stand corrected in that uncircumcised men can still be considered to be Jewish. I do understand however that they may be restricted in their participation in some religious ceremonies.

 

Anyway, I do not have any particular horse in this race as I am neither Christian nor Jewish.

Judaism is somewhat unique in that it is an ethnicity as much as a religion; a person's beliefs do not affect his designation as Jewish or non-Jewish. Another factor is the insular nature of Judaism, whose leaders have always made it difficult to convert in. So in a sense, this thread is akin to one asking about, say, the top Hispanic escorts.
