Just curious whether you believe this priest is telling the truth?...

An Irish priest, Father Martin McVeigh, has admitted he destroyed a memory stick containing "inappropriate imagery" ahead of a church investigation into reports he accidentally showed pictures of naked men to parents of children preparing for their First Holy Communion. The incident happened at the start of a PowerPoint presentation at a grade school in Northern Ireland.

However, the priest insisted he "was not responsible for the presence of the offending images and in this respect I ask you to accept my innocence." He explained: "After the images were inadvertently shown, I immediately removed the memory stick from the laptop. In my shock and concern to ensure that the images would never be shown again, I destroyed it."

The leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland, Cardinal Sean Brady, said he accepted McVeigh's story that he had no advance knowledge of the gay pornography embedded in his PowerPoint presentation.

Here's the complete story from CNN's website:

This sounds more like some one was pulling a prank on him more than anything. Why would a priest ever put porn in a presentation they were going to show parents? You would have to be really really stupid. Not saying there aren't dumb people out there, this just sounds like some one thought it would be funny. And even if he did do it, at least it wasn't kids.

I tend to agree with Phil...The priest could very well have been sabotaged. He probably deserves the benefit of doubt at least.

To me it seems more plausible, that perhaps it was material owned by the priest that he accidentally did not remove for the presentation. Rather than some plan to sabotage him, however sex scandals and inappropriate behavior among priests has been going on for decades, and is certainly nothing new, and should not surprise anyone.

I would be curious to see if anything more becomes of this, OR are all parties satisfied with the explanation given?

Tough to make a judgement on this. Could have been sabotage. But also could be that he chose the wrong file off the memory stick and opened some porn he had stored on the same stick. Stupid to have porn on the same memory stick as work material? Yes. Possible? Yes.

To me, the fact that he rushed to destroy the evidence is suspect. If he were totally innocent, wouldn't he have immediately launched an effort to find out who put it there?

It wasn't just on the memory stick though. It was in the actual PPT presentation. If it had been just on the stick then yeah I would say yes, it was definitely his. But to be placed in the presentation, that wouldn't happen by mistake and I just can't see any one being that dumb.

LOL...that's what I said years ago when the scandal first came to light about the priest molesting 'alter boys' and then the church not doing anything about it, except transferring them to other churches instead...and denying that it was occurring.

But decades later we come to find out that....well yes, people are that dumb.

The original thread says that the powerpoint presentation showed "images of naked men." I haven't read any other accounts of this story but I have a quesiton: Are images of naked men pornagraphic?? I've been to Italy and Greece and seen lots of images of naked men. I also have seen lots of "gay porn" on internet sites and in print. There is a difference. I'm wondering what the parents were shown and I'd be more willing to accept the "gay porn" label if it came from them.

I'm still not sure whether the porn images were actually within the Powerpoint presentation, or were just sharing the same memory stick. If the images were sharing the same memory stick but not in the Powerpoint, depending on the computer settings when he put the memory stick in Windows Explorer could have opened up a window that showed thumbnails of the porn images alongside the Powerpoint file icon, and that might be what the parents saw. If that's the case, I'd say it looks suspicious for the priest.

However, if the images were actually in the Poweroint file itself, I'd tend to think sabotage. I mean, who uses Powerpoint for porn? It could be a prank, or could be some nasty internal politics.

Years ago in London I rented a room in the basement (i.e. ground floor) of a vicarage. The vicar was gay, lived there with his long-term lover, and there were three of us "lodgers" renting rooms in the basement level, all of us single gay guys. It was a strictly business arrangement, no hanky panky with the lodgers, but in conversations with the vicar I got the impression things could get quite political and cut-throat in the clergy.

On the other hand, the CNN article has an update:

(Brady) issued an update on the church investigation, saying other computers used by McVeigh had been "forensically examined by an independent technical expert and no inappropriate imagery has been found."

Brady added an additional laptop stolen from the local church sacristy since the March 26 meeting "did not form part of the technical examination."

As we used to say in the day, "Makes you want to go hmmmmm...." :)

I once gave a presentation on my laptop to a packed audience of my professional peers.

This was when "OZ" had just hit HBO. The day before I had been cruising the HBO website

and looking at pictures of all the hot guys on the show.

Imagine my surprise when I power up my laptop and on the screen is a 30 foot X 20 foot projection

of Christopher Meloni lying face down and butt naked on the floor of a dirty prison cell.

It lasted only about 5-10 seconds before it was replaced with an image of my desktop....

but it seemed like hours....thankfully I am out at work and it got a good laugh from the group.

I have no idea how or why it happened. Needless to say, I only bring my presentations on thumb drives these days.

Were you quick enough on your feet to incorporate the Chris Meloni picture into your discussion. Something along the lines of say: Welcome. For those of you considering leaving early, here is what happened to the last person who tried to leave before the end. Perhaps, "Welcome, I will be bringing you the naked truth about...." or "Welcome. I really had to go to extreme measures to get this presentation ready. Here I am after completing my preparation."

I agree with EZEtoGRU. If someone had sabotaged me, I darn sure wouldn't immediately erase all of the evidence before discussing the situation with my superiors.
