This can be quite interesting...

I have brought up this topic before. And I find it quite amazing how gas prices can vary from just a few miles. I live in Alexandria, VA where the gas prices for Regular is 1.28 a gallon. But where my Dad lives just 12 miles South of me it is $.89 cents a gallon for Reg unleaded. Now in Washington DC just 3 miles North of me it is still $1.43 a gallon. And I know the poor people in San Francisco are still paying close to the 2 dollar mark for gas. That is totaly insane.

What in the hell are the Gas companies doing? x( What are you paying in your area.

I am just curious.

Here in SW Florida its $1.09 for reg. gas. I believe some of the differential is due to local and state taxes. But that can't be all of the reason.

I am pleasantly surprised that a top notch escort like Talvin has time to comparison shop for gas. What can we expect next, running into Talvin at a Tysons Corner Costco or Sam's Club? ;)

Don Newhouse told me that he heard from Graydon that it's all part of a worldwide muslim conspiracy (led by wily Saudi sheiks, Malaysian drug overlords and the madman in Tripoli; I even believe he said that Suharto's son was involved until his overthrow) to cause chaos in the markets, increase road rage, and, ultimately, bring down the ruling Judeo-Christian civilized world. He said that one of the least understood components of this evil scheme was that the price seemed to fluctuate most at the gas station next to a mood ring shop in the Haight district of San Francisco. Crazy stuff, but true.

Later.

PS. I walk or take cabs, so in this case, I'm clueless.

Traveller: those of us in Northern California have become used to paying big bucks for gas. But, damn it, the price of our mood rings have gone up as well. All of mine are permanently black!

I'm not sure of the gas prices in New Jersey, since I use diesel, but prices tend to vary depending on what part of the state you're in. Even though Exxon and Mobil have merged, Exxon stations always charge more than Mobil for diesel. Last winter I remember seeing diesel at $1.90 at an Exxon station, and driving a bit further down the road and seeing it for $1.35.........

At the present, diesel is anywhere from $1.13 to $1.35 here.

Talv,

I own lots of Chevron (now ChevronTexaco) stock, so I like the high prices. :) Buy more high-priced gas Talvin !!!, then I can fly out to DC and hire you. Think of the gas as a mere investment, you will get a good ROI.

Here in SF area I think gas is about $1.50 a gallon, but not too sure. I commute on horseback, so cost of fuel doesn't affect my cost of living directly. I am kinda pissed at the prices they are getting for apples... my horse eats lots of 'em. I think it is a Chilean/Spanish/Pinochet scheme.

Trav,

Malaysian druglords are in on this??? Tell me it ain't so. To think I was having some tender moments with a couple of bumi-putras underneath the Petronas towers. I feel so compromised.

Not sure if the numbers are valid... but I was reading about production of crude oil.

The world uses about 70 million barrells a day. The US uses about 40m bll a day. The US can produce about 30m bll, so we are almost self-sufficient. But, seems we are still held hostage to OPEC, and soon the Russians.

One of the reasons gas is more expensive at inner-city stations is the cost of real-estate for the station itself. Compare the cost of apartment rentals in downtown DC with Springfield, VA and Quantico and you'll see a similar spread.

Also, DC was one of the first cities to require emission control (those funky hoses around the nozzles), which also raised the price. It was fairly controversial when it happened.

But it's been this way for years. I have friends who will only buy gas a gallon or two at a time while toodling around in the city. They wait until they're in the 'burbs to fill the tank, and they've been doing it for as long as I've known them.

Myself, I don't buy gas. Haven't driven a car in 10 years and don't intend to start now. :p

Good point Deej,

To further that, many places in CA must retro-fit the underground tanks to comply with EPA specs. The cost to do so is enormous, especially a small business owner, dense urban area. Some owners sold out as they couldn't afford the repairs.

But I don't own a car and I own Chevron stock like you, so let's get those damn Rooskies to restrict production a bit and up that share price. For Pete's sake, the commies would've done it.

PS. Hay is much cheaper than apples, and their farts don't stink as much. A double bonus.

Ya, nice if you can get away with it. Where did you get your pony from, the flea market in San Jose?

I stole the horse from Martha Steward's bedroom. It won't even walk on hay, let alone eat it.

Coulis de Verge will only eat Ida Red's from Allegan County, Michigan, or Granny Smiths, cored of course.

>San Diego Ca, 1.89 Supreme 1.69 Mid Grade 1.49 Regular:'(

About the same here in Northern Cal... :(

When my cousin and her husband visited us from Amsterdam recently, she told me that they pay a lot more in Europe and that's why Europeans drive smaller cars.

In South Carolina regular is going for .89 all over now. In Atlanta as low as .79 :-) Hell, atleast we have one or two reasons to live around these parts..LOL

You're right but for the Commies. Part of the problem is that the Russians are trying to increase their market share, and have refused to cut production. So OPEC is letting the price fall to squeeze the Russians, who have a huge debt payment next year. At least that's what the WSJ said. Prices are too low in relation to the cost of discovery and production. But everyone views cheap fuel as a god given right.
