Dark rooms were common features of North American gay bars and clubs in the 1960s and 1970s, and can still be found in some bars and sex clubs. A backroom in a gay bar is typically a small, very dark or dimly lit room at the back of the club where customers can go to have sex, usually without undressing.

Travelling to NYC and need suggestion for locations with darkrooms. Experience?

Yes, I have experienced what you described in a few gay bars in Manhattan as recently as last year.  But, I don't want to expose them here, lest the city use the information to crack down on the activity.

I remember my first experience like this in NYC.  I was approached my a young man who was very interested in me; but, alas, I was already sexually satisfied from earlier in the evening and didn't want to travel uptown to my hotel to host him.  So, I said I couldn't host.  He then asked if I ever had sex in a gay bar.  "Not in New York", I replied; then, he led me to where the action happened.

In my experience, the guidebooks to Europe call it darkroom; in the US it's more typically backroom. Anyway, as the bard said, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet". I have had some great times in them.
