You missed the show this past week where these hosts had this discussion. As Whoopi pointed out - we are in a 'fight or flight' mode since November 5, and she (as well as the others) are opting to stay and fight for our country, and encourages everyone to do the same. As one host said, 'Why should anyone leave their country ? You stay and fight the wrong for what is right.'

I believe they were discussing Eva Longoria who moved to Mexico and Spain this summer (she owns homes in both countries) and has rented out her American homes. Longoria said it had nothing to do with politics, but quality of life and business opportunities for her.

What struck me most about this couple's expat (mis)adventure is that they never bothered to become fluent in French yet were frustrated that they weren't able to make friends or adapt to the French way of doing things.

DUH!  What the hell did they expect?

This is quite typical, mostly with entitled US natives.

I am currently planning for an "expat" life, I would never consider a destination where I would not be able to integrate with the locals. I could live for a long period of time in the Americas and in most of Europe, and perhaps in a few African countries where English is the first or second language. That's it.

I could visit any place, but my possibilities to integrate are constrained to those regions.

100% agree.  If someone is moving away they shouldn't expect to replicate the life they have left behind.  I think it's incredibly rude to move somewhere and expect others to adjust themselves for your comfort - but that seems to be the attitude of entitled people.  The expectation that local people should be able to provide services to an expat in English is ridiculous, yet many people have that expectation when they move to non-English-speaking countries.  And even when language is not a barrier, other cultural differences need to be respected.  It will be interesting to see how long Ellen can manage living in the UK, since British society is not as focussed on individual freedoms compared to American society.  It may not be as easy a transition as expected, but when you are worth hundreds of millions of dollars I suppose she doesn't need to care about integrating.  For myself, there aren't a lot of countries I could realistically relocate to because I am only fluent in English - but if I did move to a non-English-speaking country, I would make every effort to learn the language and customs of the local population - even if it was a country like the Netherlands or Denmark, where the majority of people can speak English as their second or even third language.

I’m beginning to wonder what exactly the feared “new circumstance” is when I see, nothwithstanding a couple of silly choices, the number of women, and even a married gay man, are being put up for influential roles.  I’m not espousing a position since if one of us has something to fear, then we all do. But I’m wondering if some of these hyped high profile departures doth protest too much.

Having been an ex-pat myself at one time, I think the distinction is that an immigrant normally moves to another country with the expectation of staying there and becoming a citizen of that country, whereas an ex-pat normally intends to retain his original citizenship even while living in another country.
