COM (Company of Men) members used to advocate requesting a three-finger selfie as a way to obtain a candid, current photo. The popularity of this hand gesture nullifies the value (what little there was) of the request. 

in the dawn of hookup apps and online culture, it was common to ask for a picture of you holding a random item or putting a certain number of fingers up to ascertain that the person who you were speaking with was indeed who they said they were. 


Don't know why anyone would use a picture in an ad like that, unless I guess it's their RM verification photo with the date? But even then, that just verifies that the person photographed is really linked to the profession, not that they're the one you're speaking to.
