Advice for Nairobi, Kenya

Hello CoM community: Can anyone offer advice or share experience in finding a an escort in Nairobi, Kenya? As you may know, homosexuality is still criminalized there but I see some providers advertising. Thanks!

I have had many years of experience traveling and living in various parts of Africa.  With the exception of South Africa I would recommend you do not hire at all.  If you are looking for a hookup, look in the upscale hotel bars.  Keep away from any activity on the street or clubs.  Homophobia is rampant in Africa.

I have a friend of a friend who is traveling to Cameroon on the west of Africa, and his family is from there originally.

Now, I don’t know all the details as I’ve not been there before and not sure if they’re going to the city or country. He lives in Iowa (you’d be surprised, there’s a bit of African transplants out there) but he’s been having conversations with us and saying he’s had to remove all hair dye before going, as the chance of getting arrested (not for being an escort, but gay) is too big of a chance to take being a visitor.
 

He did tell me there’s either a club scene or network for it, where gays can meet up. But, I couldn’t tell you. Here’s an article you might find handy.

In addition to the good advice offered here, be mindful of the current civil unrest in Kenya where the police have killed unarmed demonstrators in the streets.

That’s true of South Africa in general where equal rights for gay people are enshrined in the Constitution. Even there, social acceptance varies: a great deal of the tolerance reflects tourism, consumer spending and urban interests; there’s still homophobia in rural areas.

In Kenya, I’d urge you to follow the advice of @dcman above IF you insist on hooking up. Homophobia is more open there, and you should be VERY discreet. Bear in mind that not only is there civil unrest in the capital but also the really poor areas are close by - a well-fed, well-dressed American or European will stand out and be a target.

Excellent advice on Nairobi. I had a close friend, now deceased, who lived there. Be extremely cautious!
