This is a great shot depicting pinning and control techniques used by the top wrestler. Since the top wrestler is grabbing the bottom wrestler’s arm, he’s doing a “wrist ride” or “arm bar” where the top wrestler has control over the bottom wrestler’s arm locked down and to keep the bottom on the mat. Since the bottom is on his stomach though and not his back (both shoulders on the backside need to hit the mat in order to score a pin), a pin from this position is difficult, so my guess is he’s trying to score as many points as possible. (Objective always is to pin - a pin is an automatic win. If not, you always try to score as many points as possible. Most points win if no one has pinned.)

From a wrist ride, the top wrestler can work towards scoring points through a variety of moves such as tilts or rolls.

So I'm kind of seriously asking... do wrestlers EVER wear jock-straps, or is it common to go commando under your singlet?

Depends on the wrestler. It’s standard practice for wrestlers to choose some form of undergarment such as a jock strap or compression shorts for support, comfort, and hygiene. However, some choose to go commando.

As long as we're a little off topic, how are points scored (said another way, what counts as a point)? And who is keeping track - the referee?

So each wrestler wears either a RED or GREEN ANKLE strap which helps the referee keep track, or better said, flag for the scorer’s table which wrestler (red or green) gets which points. The referee will wear RED or GREEN wrist band to correspond to the wrestler.

Points are scored based on various actions during a match. These are the main ways points are scored:

1. **Takedown**: A wrestler earns 2 points for taking their opponent down to the mat and gaining control.

2. **Escape**: If a wrestler escapes from their opponent's control, they earn 1 point.

3. **Reversal**: A wrestler earns 2 points for reversing their opponent's control position and taking control themselves.

4. **Near Fall (Back Points)**: If a wrestler nearly pins their opponent's shoulders to the mat, they can earn 2 or 4 points, depending on the duration of the near-fall position.

5. **Stalling Penalty**: If a wrestler is penalized for stalling, their opponent is awarded 1 point.

6. **Technical Fall**: If a wrestler leads their opponent by 15 points, the match is stopped, and the leading wrestler wins. (Major decision)

The points are recorded by the scorer's table whenever the ref lifts arm, where it is recorded and displayed for the wrestlers and audience to see.

Hope that helps.

I wrestled for years and always went commando. Most forms of underwear / jocks etc are going to be uncomfortable under the tightness of a wrestling singlet. The only time I would see guys choose to wear a jockstrap was those who were hung so big it was a little pornographic without.

TIP OF THE DAY

Random tip for any couples or single dads who have small children looking to wrestle: get them in young gymnastics early. May seem like an odd pairing, but a few of my coaches had recommended this for young kids, and many DI and DII athletes have mentioned this in interviews.

I didn’t know this at the time (but I can see it now), but apparently the skills and attributes developed in gymnastics can complement wrestling and contribute to a young wrestler’s success.

1. Flexibility

2. Core Strength

3. Balance

4. Body Awareness

5. Agility

6. Discipline

7. Confidence

By participating in gymnastics, young wrestlers can develop a strong foundation of physical and mental skills that can enhance their performance and success in wrestling.
