pubic_assistance
I would be more interested in this story if he were navigating his homosexuality while still on the team. Waiting until he's retired seems pretty uncomplicated.
Njguy2
@pubic_assistance Totally agree with you on his timing, but for every person coming out it is different. thomas, + Charlie and pubic_assistance
+ Charlie
Unlike most popular team sports (football, basketball, hockey, etc.), baseball is unusual in that each player stands alone in his own spot on the field most of the time, and the pitcher in particular feels like he is on stage, because much of the focus of the other players and the audience is on him. Burke and Bean were both outfielders, where it was easier to avoid the spotlight and blend into the background. It's also worth noting that Burke was involuntarily outed, and it destroyed his career. + WilliamM and pubic_assistance 1
+ Lucky
See my review of the novel Fire Season in the Literature forum! Two pitchers fall in love. + Charlie

Always a cruel decision for someone to make for someone else. I played sports in High School and College. I know what grief you're going to get from certain people when they know you're gay ( or even bi ). I would hope the world has changed enough that the number of people who will respond negatively is now in a distinct minority. thomas and + Charlie
+ purplekow
As longs as members of team sports teams are men in a locker room, someone is bound to be uncomfortable if there is a whiff of gay in the air, because we all know how gosh durned irresistible all straight guys are, or so they believe. + Charlie, mike carey and + Lucky 1
