Travel to Costa Rica

I have never been to Costa Rica and would like to go but I know nothing about where are the reasonable places to stay.  I may be going with a straight friend and so gay hot spots are not necessary.  Looking for a nice beach with interesting scenery.   Moderate price would be nice.  Checking  out if this might be a place I would considering having as my retirement home.

Hopefully your recommendations will make my researching a bit easier.  Thanks for the help.

Did not place this under travel because I am not looking to hook up or meet up while I am there.

I'm not sure what it is like now, but 15 years ago when viewed as a great place to retire I couldn't get over all the retirement homes in the country and all the great hype about living there, and then you see the fences and barbed wire around the houses.  Wasn't safe to leave home unattended and prices went up.  I just could never see the "greatness" of Costa Rica as a place to retire.  Beautiful to visit, but for me not where I would want to live.

I have not been to CR but it's on my short list so have done some research on it.   Costa Rica has fantastic beaches, cities and rainforest all in a small country.   When I do go, I'm hoping to see all 3.  You can find packages that include all 3.  In the rainforest there are resorts which have treetop villas where you are surrounded by wildlife (monkeys, birds, etc.).  There are American branded resorts as well (Hilton, etc) if that's what you are looking for.  While travel agencies are not as common as they once were, this might be a case where you use one....American Express for example still offers travel agent services.   Costco also has great deals on travel packages.  Lastly, Tripadvisor is a great resource for reviews of hotels and resorts.  Good luck, Jack

Costa Rica is the spot to go onto Airbnb or VRBO and find a fantastic home/compound.  Prices are uniformly affordable.

The homeowner can usually have groceries arranged (or tell you where to shop) or, if you'd like, have a cook come in.

While a hotel would be more traditionally convenient, the houses on offer in CR are incredible.

I'm looking at flying into Liberia.  I'll probably avoid San Jose.

Good call. San Jose is a sh*t hole.  Accommodations are generally affordable everywhere in the country. Definitely avoid American brand name resorts, as these will charge American prices. Stick to local beach resorts where locals from San Jose might stay themselves. Costa Rica is a poor country, so your dollar goes a long way. But like with any poor country, there are many scams trying to take advantage of rich American tourists.  I found the best run places are those with access to the National Parks. There's a lot to pick from, and a basic command of the Spanish Language gets you a much better price.

Thank you.  I know a little basic Spanish.  I hope it is enough...

Its been several years since I’ve been to Costa Rica but I enjoyed it very much. I stayed at a gay resort called the Villa Roca and believe it is operated by a German national.  The resort is in Manuel Antonio and on the Pacific side of the country.  Somewhat difficult to get there but my transportation was arranged by my gay friendly hotel in San Jose.

Very relaxing time…nice beach, great zip lining, close by national park.  Not sure what it’s like now but worth researching for those interested.

As a side note, the city of San Jose did not have street names.  I think they were in the process of changing that though. Colours hotel actually sent me directions to give the taxi driver…..turn left at purple house, go 1 mile, then turn right at the Catholic Church, etc.   or some such thing.

I found this on their website:

DIRECTIONS TO COLOURS IN ENGLISH:

it’s the large white hotel building on the northwest corner of the Rohrmoser Boulevard (corner of the Triangle), two blocks from where the boulevard ends. Entrance through side glass doors of Restobar Media Naranja

DIRECTIONS TO COLOURS IN SPANISH:

(show to your taxi driver): Esquina noroeste del Triangulo del Bulevar Rohrmoser, 200 metros antes del final bulevar, edificio blanco en la esquina, entrada con Restobar Media Naranja

This site is rather helpful for our hobby. All in Spanish but I was able to use Google translate to effectively communicate my needs.

Also don't write off San Jose. There are many bars and spas worth visiting; where many young and gorgeous ticos hangout.

Avoid puchos. They over charge for what you get. The dancers are very money motivated.

Costa Rica is an incredible choice! For someone looking into a serene beach and scenic views, Manuel Antonio National Park would be an ideal recommendation. The park offers a mix of pristine beaches, dense rainforests, and abundant wildlife. Plus, Quepos, a nearby town, provides a range of reasonably priced accommodations.

Considering other locations as retirement options? Maybe think about exploring via cruise routes. The website Cruisetimetables offers a comprehensive breakdown of different destinations and their schedules.

Hope you've had a wonderful trip or are planning one soon. Safe travels and all the best with your retirement decisions!
