RBENJI Posted July 8, 2021 Share Posted July 8, 2021 Just a heads up to all my NYC folks (and potential visitors), the owner of Shangrila is now opening up a new spa in Midtown West, called Alpha Men’s Spa, which is slated to open on the 10th. No word of who the masseur’s are yet, but if anyone is interested, then .. https://www.alphaspanyc.com I plan on checking them out ASAP, so I’ll report back (and provide butt naked details as per usual) when that happens. I'd count on them to be a good iine up. I know the owner of Shangrila and he aims to please. He's got even more competition in midtown west than on the east side, so he'll need to hire some hot studs. Jorge started out at Shangrila. I was one of his early customers. I think Shangrila's prices are reasonable and in line with other NYC men's spas. I find spas to be less than half the cost of a private mssseur. However, there is the expectation of a tip equal to the price of the massage charged by the spa if the customer leaves happy. That’s the thing, I feel like anything above $60/$65 for an hour at a spa gets too close to the price of a private masseur when you factor in tip. I know a few forum members who’ve said they tip 100% when they leave happy. But me personally, I usually just go with $50-$100, depending on the service(s). Nice place, but…. it is setup like shangrila: the walls do not go all the way up to the ceiling, so you can hear everyone else’s conversation when they are having their massage. This is a big issue for someone like me who is a big moaner, especially at the critical moment. also i was super cold, but there is no A/C control in each room, it is centralised. Got assigned Karl who is cute and friendly. I got more or less what I expected from the massage, but 3 things means I won’t try him again: - he put a towel over my eyes after I turned over. - he moved my hands up above my head at the critical moment. It is a nice way to say “no touching”, and I respect that, but I can find masseurs who do not ever do that or say that. - the end of the massage was a bit forceful, he needs to handle this body part more gently. wDarling Posted August 13, 2021 Share Posted August 13, 2021 I went to Alpha the other day. Nice, clean place. Everything seemed brand new. My masseur was kind of so-so. Cute guy, seemed nice and polite, but massage was really slow and light (even though he said it would go from light to medium to hard, it went from really really light to really light to light). I don’t want to name him publicly, cause he did seem like he was trying, but just didn’t seem trained well enough. I asked for deeper and his response was “yup” before proceeding to continue giving the same lazy rub over my shoulders over and over. I ended up shortening it from 60 mins to 30. These new guys are def not at the level of the guys I used to see at Shangrila IMO, but maybe they’re still trying to find good providers.
