As a Canadian reading these news reports, I am reminded that a lot of these issues discussed in the articles are linked to the US being the only industrialized country in the world without universal health coverage. Millions of these marginalized populations in the US simply don’t have adequate health care, which is why these co-morbidities wreek havoc when they contract COVID.

That’s a bit of a leap in logic.

And we all know Canadians have the luxury of running to America when they need real healthcare.

In fact, most of the Socialist elite throughout the world do.

So it’s a pretty unfair comparison don’t ya think?

Another myth propagated by the US health insurance and private hospital lobbies. Lol

I had considered replying to him with a simple, 'No'.

Of course everyone knows that people in border and near border cities like Niagara, Windsor and Vancouver always go to a neighbouring US city for all their health care and Canadians routinely use mail-order American pharmacies for all their prescription drugs.

Medical tourism is very common for Americans too. According to the American Journal of Medicine, some 750,000 Americans per year engage in the practice, with one of the top destinations being Costa Rica. The article states that in many cases the cost of the medical procedures in other countries are 30-60% less expensive than in the US.

I am actually hopeful that the US can get closer to universal healthcare under Biden's administrations. His proposal for a robust public option I think could be a game changer. It would basically expand Medicaid so any American who wanted it could choose the government-run insurance option. In addition, you would basically be opted in the public option automatically if you didn't have insurance through your job. Though of course anyone could opt-out of the public option and choose a private insurance plan or no insurance at all. Biden also wants to expand the insurance subsides to make all insurance more affordable and even free for very low-income individuals. It wouldn't be quite universal coverage but basically everyone who wanted a government insurance plan could have one.

I am assuming this is meant facetiously. Canada has nearly 38 million people. According to the Fraser Institute, a well-respected Canadian think tank, estimated in 2017 that that the number of individuals leaving Canada for treatment elsewhere (generally the U.S.) is 64,000 people. This was for a variety of reasons but the main reason was because of waiting times for procedures. At the same time a 2016 study showed that 1.4 million Americans travelled abroad for medical treatment.

I thought this was an interesting (and very informative) video regarding the Canadian system and American systems. The video is of a Senate Committee hearing held about 6 years ago. (about 6 min.)

I found this to be an interesting AARP article about medical care in Canada and some of the myths about it.

It is true that American healthcare is among the best in the world - for those who can afford it. Many can't and are uninsured, so the best healthcare in the world doesn't do them much good.

Absolutely it was. I chose to use the prescription drug example because it is the opposite of what happens, and has been discussed in these forums.

Edited to add: That video and article go a long way to illustrate how a single payer system works, and how much of the US establishment works to reject it. It's a fact that the US system provides excellent care to those who can afford it, and that in a single payer system some may miss out. Or more often have to wait. People going to the US for an MRI doesn't validate or invalidate either system. I went to the doctor and had to pay $125 for the consultation (different system to Canada where everything is free at the point of delivery), but got half of it back from Medicare. A follow-up consultation was 'free', billed directly to Medicare. I have insurance, but if I had a heart attack I would be treated but wouldn't have to pay or use my insurance, the public system would cover it.

Sorry, I tend to be rather stupid. I always look for some kind of smiley face after what's written, as if I am a kindergartner or something.

Sorry to have disliked your previous comment but that's completely not true.

I cannot speak for other 1st world socialist countries but I do think that the Canadian Health care system is way better than the American one.

I think your argument applies if we talk about Health Science/Tech and Innovation, but in terms of public access to GOOD health care, we do better.

And the outcomes of the two systems are abundantly clear. Lower life expectancy in America, more chronic illnesses, more obesity, I could go on.
