I’m surprised by the amount of Burner Phone people. Of course I did know of @azdr0710 and his circa 2005 Burner! ?

What surprises you about the number of burner phone users? I expected it to be higher.

I had used Google voice for a while but found managing it to be an inconvenience. Just not to my liking.

Tracfone. $100 a year, after buying an inexpensive phone ($79 for mine). Enough talk and text time if you don't hire often. Pay cash for the phone, and pay cash for the annual card. Easy-peasy.

That was my first cell phone. Definitely best phone I ever owned hands down. Non-functional but I still have it.

Ha! Not to brag (much) but my trusty Nokia 8210 from 2000 still works! It is tiny (convenient) and with great battery life...how quickly we have gotten used to charging our devices multiple times a day! I replaced the battery 2 years ago, still get 6 days on a charge if I don’t talk more than two hours a day. ? Apologies to the OP, we did get a little off ‘trac’...

Three years ago, when I received threats from a couple of escorts, I started to use Google Voice. I usually make the first contact with this number if the provider has no references. If I like him and we click, I share my personal number. Whether to use WhatsApp or not is up to him, but I do love WhatsApp!

As I am now traveling more often, specially South of Rio Grande, I am considering a burner phone to use local chips and hide my American origin, just like I did in Argentina last trip, avoiding the extra fees for foreigners.

What’s App is essential for countries outside of the US. I’m pretty sure 75%+ of my contacts in Canada use it (I have never worked outside of North America).

Americans, especially in this hobby, need to understand that most of the rest of the world uses WhatsApp for messaging.

The reason why WhatsApp has never caught on in the US is very simple: Its value proposition to the American user is near zero. As explained in this article on Quartz, most American carriers do not charge for sending and receiving texts. (Note I said most and not all.) That is not the case in most countries outside of the US. Therefore, in the US, there is no reason to use an app other than the one that is built into the phone, unless you use a flip-phone in which case your texts are sent like this

Perhaps the only circumstance you addressed could explain the lack of popularity of the app. However, if you are an American who is exposed to WhatsApp, you will find out that it is a very versatile and friendly user messaging app, that works in any OS and allows you to keep all your conversations and files if you move from one platform to another. Plus, it has one of the most safe encryption systems in the market if you care about your privacy. I do not know another single app that allows me to do so much stuff (videoconferencing, voice conferencing, voice messaging, video messaging, sharing any kind of files, texting, setting groups and broadcast lists, and who knows what else!).

So even when you make a very good point to explain why it is not popular in the USA, I am still puzzled by the lack of popularity of such an amazing tool.
