Ironically, after reading this thread the other day this post popped up in my facebook feed, interesting project in Boston for LGBTQ senior housing.......

We need more support (including jobs, if they are able) for ppl with disabilities (a lot of discrimination here, or lack of understanding of what ppls abilities are)...and national health care (health care is a fundamental human right). Noone should go bankrupt because of illness; and no parent should have to decide whether they should take their kid to the doctor or put food on the table.

I 100% agree with this. While I am a strong D, I have a problem with all the "free college' and tuition forgiveness since it devalues the trades and other legitimate skill development paths......we need tradespeople, emergency services, military and other non-college educated people to make our economy hum. I WOULD be a fan of a national service program to support skills development.

Exactly, and both things required risk-taking, work and sacrifice: relocating to an expensive big city and getting an education. THIS is the American Dream, look what immigrants are willing to risk and sacrifice because there truly is no (or very limited) opportunity in their country! Many of the ppl who are "stuck" have not been to an underdeveloped country to understand the riches we have.

The American Dream is more alive than ever. I think the problem is less that the dream is dead (ie there is no opportunity), rather that our culture has changed and ppl either don't appreciate all the opportunity available or aren't willing to do the work to attain it. I am admittedly biased - as one of 7 kids from a middle class family where dad mismanaged his money (ergo there was no money for college or helping kids to launch) we all had to figure out how to make our way in this world. All 7 kids got college degrees (from AAS to PhD) and have successful lives. Launching in our family was being provided an invoice for rent when you turned 18, and a handshake when you announced you were moving out (which I did at 18). I started working at 15 mowing lawns, and then unpacking boxes at a clothing store chain. I worked full time at a supermarket and put myself through community college (while living in poverty in an apartment with 2 other guys), when I graduated I went right to work in an entry level corporate job. 1 year later I moved to Boston, because there is much more opportunity than in small town upstate NY. Over the years I earned my BS and MBA having my employer contribute (some, not enough!), I taught college classes part time to pay for my MBA, which I did - cash and no loans. I made 30k by 25, 50k by 30 and 100k by 40...I'm 60 now and have earned an exec title and salary. The dream is not dead, there is more opportunity than ever. We are not adequately preparing our kids to be hungry, to hustle, to mow lawns and move out, to make their own decisions, to face uncertainty and adversity, and to fail (we need to be willing and able to fail to be successful). Kids are not living better lives than their parents because (many) parents have stopped preparing their kids to do just that. Many parents ARE preparing their kids to be successful, and for them....the world is their oyster. There is more opportunity than ever.

Cannabis is legal here in MA so I buy mine at the store, there is a brand I love (Southie Adams) - lovely energizing high, not sleepy, and not eating everything in the pantry 😛 They are gummies and come in a few flavors including blood orange, guava, and passion fruit.

One of my life mantras is that disappointment is bourne of expectations. That said (1) gift giving has gone the way of many other social graces, such as birthday cards and thank you notes and (2) I do think it's tacky to show up for a milestone birthday where you are treated at a nice restaurant and not even bring (or send) a card? You can get great cards at Trader Joe's for 99 cents...all it takes is a little thought. Like others, I don't expect gifts I am fortunate to have everything I need...but a simple card would be minimally thoughtful.

It seems to me that this sounds better "on paper" than reality would be In addition to my day job I teach indoor cycling (aka spin) part-time. During COVID lockdown, I thought "I'll just teach online". $1500 and 100 hours later I had all the tech and my home studio set up, then I had to market myself, schedule classes, keep track of billing, etc. Long story short, it was a TON of work and NOT FUN. And, the ROI sucked. In the end, I made my $1500 back then stopped teaching online. Now, post-COVID, I'm back to teaching at a gym and all I have to do is show up! They take care of the rest. And I make about $500/month of "mad money" (which is also my hiring money LOL) for a few hours per week of work. Teaching also keeps me accountable to doing the work I WOULD (should) BE DOING ANYWAY! Point is, I feel like I have learned via the "ask a provider" section that being a provider is a ton of work - outside the "on" time' i.e. several hours of work probably go into every hour that produces income. Then, there are the head (and rear) aches and other challenges to this hustle. So, the suggestion to find a side hustle that funds your playtime is a good one 🥰 BTW, I have great legs!
