  1. I managed to go to a preview performance before everything shut down, I really liked it. The production design, the choreography, all surprisingly entertaining. Lenk is very funny and her acting is quite good, although I think her voice doesn't really come up to the same high level. The only thing that bothered me was her white sneakers in one stretch of the show, very distracting. She is moving around a lot, so I wondered if this was just temporary while getting used to it. Very minor thing. I can hardly believe Patti was 70 at that time! I do hope I can get to see it again.

  2. We will see if it works out, he has to actually make it to DC first. ;)

I tried, but it didn't work out. I got A LOT of messages from him, but never a specific time and place to meet, even after he said he would confirm if I provided him my phone number, which I did. As per my established policy, I don't chase after people, I figured if he wanted to meet, he would get back to me with a time and a place. But I never heard back with those details.

So imagine my surprise when, after the time window I had told him had passed, he texted me to say "we" had missed my appointment. Not sure who the we is, but since I never had a time and a place to meet, I didn't miss an appointment.

Since he has good feedback from reliable members, I just chalk it up to not working out for me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  3. I’m trying, with some success, to keep my sense of humor. Just returned from my local Smart & Final here in North Orange County, CA. I live in a mixed ethnicity neighborhood with many limited speaking English residents. My market is operating with a single checkout line. As each check out station becomes free the checker calls out next and waves his or her hand for the customer to approach. A limited speaking woman charged past the line and when immediately to an open checkout station. The cashier, who defines the term “dumb blonde” informed the woman that she needed to wait in the line. The woman feigning lack of understanding insisted that the checker check her out. Eventually the “dumb blonde” checker began to do so. In her basked the woman had four packages of chicken. The checker informed her that she was only allowed two. Again feigning lack of understanding the woman insisted that she wanted four. This time the checker stuck to her guns. Finally the checker at the next stand, where I was being checked out, asked if he could help. The entire routine repeated itself. Finally the woman insisted that the checker call the manager. The checker in my line told the checker to call the manager on the store intercom. The “dumb blonde” looked askance but called for the manager. After a brief pause the young man who initially asked if he could help turned to the irate woman and asked again if he could help. By now the woman was furious and insisted that she wanted to speak to the manager. The young man proceed to look at her with a straight face and slight grin and informed her that he was the manager. The woman now proceeded to demand the name and telephone number of the manager’s superior. He happily wrote out the name and telephone number of the district manager, wishing the woman good luck as it was the district manager who had instituted the policy. The woman threw her money down and walked out of the store with TWO packages of chicken. The manager looked at me with a sly grin and muttered “fucking bitch”. I damn near wet my pants laughing.

Love this. While this didn't happen in the current era, once upon a time I was in the express checkout lane at a grocery store and there was someone in the line with a cart full of stuff. People in line were calling out the guy, who ignored them, which made them get more agitated. When he got to the checker, people started addressing her about it. She put up her hand and said "I got this". She rang up his allowed 15 items and told him if he wanted the rest of the stuff in his cart he would have to go through the line again. He swore and claimed he was taking care of his sick mother and couldn't be expected to stand in a line. She said no, and he walked out, leaving everything. People started applauding.

  4. I suggest reading this trenchant analysis by engineer Liz Specht. She calculates that the US will be facing collapse of our health care system by mid-May.

How about by the end of March?

  5. From what I've read, the point of masks (not that the wearers share this view) is that they stop droplet transmission from infected individuals, not that they protect the wearers from the virus.

I'm not planning on wearing one the next time I go to the strip club. ;)

But my understanding currently is that one of the unknowns about COVID-19 is effectiveness of transmission. In other words, there is a spectrum of infectiousness and there is a question if COVID-19 unusually infectious via air, more like measles?

Fortunately, i don't expect to be in a situation where I have to wonder about possible exposure. Conferences are being cancelled and it seems likely most of the events I would normally attend are going to be cancelled, or be conducted remotely.

  6. What we have here is a Pandemic of Fear. The Covid-19 virus is definitely serious and will spread around the globe. The infection rate and death toll will be widespread. Unfortunately, it is difficult to asses the truth about risk levels because of media sensationalism and governments that have not been honest and forthcoming since this epidemic began in late 2019.

Individuals need to inform themselves about the true facts of this outbreak from multiple sources and not rely solely on cable news and Twitter. The CDC and World Health Organization have been the primary sources I’ve used to learn about Covid-19 and determine my personal response.

I am not buying into the Pandemic of Fear. Buying surgical masks and N-95 respiratory masks will not prevent anyone from contracting Covid-19. For every N-95 mask purchased by individuals thinking this will prevent them from contacting the virus means that there will be fewer masks available to those who have greater need for them - healthcare providers and patients actually infected. This will create shortages of necessary medical supplies and make the situation worse.

I have replenished food staples and other necessities but I’m not making any special efforts. From the CDC and conversations with people who I know in the medical field I’m approaching Covid-19 like it’s the flu and taking necessary precautions Including frequent hand washing and using sanitizers. I’m keeping informed of latest developments but the one thing I will not do is cave into the Pandemic of Fear.

I've added this to my daily reading list, they usually have one post a weekday, a non dramatic summary of recent developments:

Since I usually have a few months of food on hand, I haven't changed my buying habits at all.

I already had a supply of N95 masks on hand, due to an ongoing DIY project. One thing I will say about them, if it isn't slightly uncomfortable, it's not being effective, you are likely breathing around it, which is kinda pointless.
