  1. I saw it, and I'm going to see it again. It definitely requires you pay attention if you want to have any hope to understand what is going on. If not, you just have to enjoy the action sequences. Almost all the negative reviews I've seen so far take the position that an audience shouldn't have to think.

Just to give you an idea how challenging it is to grasp, every single review I've seen (that goes into actual details) has gotten specific things wrong about what happened, even the wikipedia plot summary had incorrect details when I looked. The only thing that has everything right (that I've seen) is a pinned thread over at the Tenet subreddit.

  2. One of the subtleties that always brings a smile to me is the sound every time they show the aircraft flying. It’s the sound of a propeller aircraft!

Turns out there is a backstory on that...

    D. Zucker:
The most amazing thing is the way Eisner handled the situation. We had this meeting with him on Friday where we really put our foot down, and we explained why it was correct to have this thing on a prop plane and in black and white.” And he listened very politely, and when we were done, he said, “Well, you’ve stated your case very well. In fact, you may be right, and you may go on to make this movie in black and white and on a prop plane, and it may be very successful. But it won’t be at this studio.” That’s what he said. And so there’s this silence, and then I think he broke it. He said, “Why don’t you guys think it over, and then we’ll talk again on Monday.” He was so good at handling us. Of course, on Monday, we said, “Okay, we’re fine.”

Surely you can’t be serious: An oral history of Airplane!

  3. I feel like the "what precaution do you take when out in the world" question is the new "are you neg?".

The conversations with my straight friends give me serious flashbacks to the weird rationalization conversations with gay friends in the pre-HAART days, with the same kind of odd blind spots. Recently a friend who refuses to eat any restaurant food told me about a party he had at his house. !?!?!

  4. Looks like Nov. 24th street date for the home video release with extras for the film nerds:

    Criterion.com: The Irishman

    • Newly edited roundtable conversation among Scorsese and actors Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, originally recorded in 2019
    • New documentary about the making of the film featuring Scorsese; the lead actors; producers Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Jane Rosenthal, and Irwin Winkler; director of photography Rodrigo Prieto; and others from the cast and crew
    • New video essay written and narrated by film critic Farran Smith Nehme about The Irishman’s synthesis of Scorsese’s singular formal style
    • The Evolution of Digital De-aging, a 2019 program on the visual effects created for the film
    • Archival interview excerpts with Frank “the Irishman” Sheeran and International Brotherhood of Teamsters trade union leader Jimmy Hoffa

  5. Anyone else looking forward to the Dune remake? Only thing I can’t figure out is if they aren’t including Feyd Harkonen character. I think that would be a miss and I would be bummed.

I am looking very much forward to this, the director Denis Villeneuve has a lot of good will in my book, so cautiously optimistic. It's a two parter, so Feyd may be coming later.

  6. I'm not familiar with the comic book version of the characters, so the trailer promised over the top chaotic action and the movie delivers. I enjoyed it quite a bit. I actually went to see it in theaters before the shutdown since an R rating usually means there will be fewer annoying brats in the audience.
