  1. And the French expression "faire la toilette" means "to wash up."
  2. No, I think you're right, on reflection. The expression "toilet water" is probably as archaic as the idea of doing one's toilet. I do note that the Google definition of toilet water is a dilute form of perfume.
  3. Does it? "Doing" one's "toilet" is an archaic way of saying freshening up in the morning-washing face, brushing hair, etc, applying some makeup. I remember my mother using the expression "toilet water." Time was when toilets were called water closets. They started calling them toilets out of an excessive sense of delicacy. I think WC is still used to denote a public restroom.
  4. September - exactly what i've been thinking
  5. If you hose out, it will enhance your enjoyment. I'm into FF, and I've come to see cleaning out as part of the experience instead of a necessary chore.

    Dating

It's always been that way. Hookup apps are just a force multiplier. During AIDS, I tried to just date and get to know guys, but more often than not, we ended up in bed on the first date. It takes a lot of restraint.
  7. As Dr. Fauci said, "The virus determines the timeline."
  8. A lot of retailers delivered, and they didn't charge. I seem to remember that they started charging when the price of oil skyrocketed in the 70s
  9. That's a much more constructive attitude than we had. We were similarly situated. Nice little grocery across the street and the Campo de Fiori was a short walk. One afternoon, I went in a meat market in the neighborhood. There was a big leg of something in the case and the women said it was "pig meat." It seemed way to red for pork, but I bought it anyway. She sliced us some nice cutlets and I took them home and sauteed them with wild mushrooms. Fabulous!!! Turns out it was wild boar.
  10. When I lived in Germany many years ago, I noticed that the kitchens in German homes were tiny - Small refrigerators, not much counter space, few cabinets. And they shopped for groceries frequently - not every day necessarily, but certainly several times a week. I always wondered which came first - did they have small kitchens because they did't believe in keeping a lot of food on hand or did they not keep a lot of food on hand because they had small kitchens. A few years ago, my husband and I rented a condo in Rome for a couple weeks. The kitchen was absurdly small. We only fixed a couple meals there because the kitchen was so difficult to work in. OTOH, I have been in a few homes in England and their kitchens seem to be scaled more like American kitchens.
  11. We got milk, bread and eggs.
  12. I was thinking about what shopping for groceries was like when I was a kid. There were unusual things or specialty items that you just couldn't get and you did without them. If you ran out of something, you didn't run out and buy it, you did without it until grocery day. If the store was out of what you wanted you just waited for it until they restocked it. I also remember that we had quite a few older neighbors who never shopped. They called the grocery store and placed an order by phone and it was delivered later that day. All the houses had those doors for delivery men to place stuff in. They called them "milk doors." Everything old is new again.
  13. I really enjoy going to the barber to get my hair cut and beard trimmed. I miss not being able to do it.
  14. I keep mine buzzed really short. I didn't used to like guys with shaved heads at all. But I'm liking it more and more. I'm even thinking about trying it.
  15. I'm habitually an early riser - 5:30 or 6A. I've been sleeping in - sometimes not getting up until after 8A. Really enjoying it, feeling very rested.
  16. My husband and I cut each other's hair last weekend. I'm easy - he just needs to buzz me. I gave him one of the best cuts I've ever egiven him. We were both relaxed and I really saw, for the first time, how to do the feathering and the tapering. It certainly wasn't a professional cut, but it was a pretty good amateur cut.
  17. Not necessarily. It depends on what they were using. There are compounds known for putting on "quality" mass that doesn't go away very much, if at all. On the other hand, there are compounds that cause the user to retain a lot of water and blow up like a balloon.
  18. No - But I'm a teetotaler anyway. And I still practice full-time. I've found staying occupied to be really soothing, so Ive been taking care of all sorts of things I had been putting off. Weve been hitting the desserts pretty hard. My husband has been cranking out pies. A few days ago, I made blueberry lemon pound cake. Just yesterday. I found a Kodiak Cakes brownie mix in the cabinet and I made that. I think they might be the best brownies Ive ever had. I've been sleeping late every day. Feel terrific.
  19. l've been using tension bands, dumbbells and bodyweight exercises. My coach sends me workouts, and he and his wife have been doing group trainings on zoom. I also really like the workouts my favorite guy on Instagram - a hunky trainer in LA -designs.
  20. It may also be that 8 hour shifts aren't needed. My mother lived in an independent living facility in Atlanta, but she did need more care beyond what the facility provided. My sister made an arrangement with an agency to stop by morning and evening. The morning person got her out of bed, showered and dressed, breakfast and morning meds. The evening person got her ready for bed and did meds again.
  21. This is a big one. My father had end-stage kidney disease and congestive heart failure and was on dialysis. He couldn't take care of himself and needed to be on a special diet both for his heart disease and his kidney disease. A social worker at his dialysis center sat me down one afternoon and said "you need to make this as easy on yourself as you can" and started hooking me up with all kinds of services that I had no idea existed. It made all the difference.
  22. Of course she's a political figure-she's the head of state. What is more, she is the Sovereign - the sovereign power of the government resides in her- it gives the government legitimacy. It's no accident that the government is referred to as Her Majesty's government. In monarchies, the monarch has an almost mystical role-the Monarch embodies the history, values and common principles around which the people unite. Here in the US, we're too adult for that-the People are sovereign. When I last looked, that wasn't working too well.
  23. They took one out in the 90's - the Embarcadero Freeway. If you think it's bad now, you should see what they had planned for it during that crazy urban renewal binge in the late 50s - early 60s. The entire city was going to be criss-crossed with freeways. The old money in San Francisco managed to get most of the projects killed.
