I stand corrected. The doctors writing in the New England Journal of Medicine shouldn't have assumed she was asymptomatic without checking. That's not a journalistic problem, but it's a scientific problem because they didn't test one of their premises for veracity.

Otherwise you are deliberately mischaracterizing what I am saying. I'm not sure how "lack of sick pay and pressure from employers to be at work incentivizes people not to take time off when sick" amounts to "we all just need to get infected with communicable viruses." That's without even getting into whether one's symptoms are from communicable diseases, whether viruses or otherwise. Or are you saying it's reasonable to expect everyone to know off the bat when sometimes not even doctors know?

I was going to mention in my post that he should assume financial responsibility for his care, but quite frankly, at his age, he is would be covered by Medicare and likely a secondary insurance, so there is little chance he will absorb the cost.
However there is quite a bit of difference between at home dialysis or an upscale dialysis center and a prison dialysis unit, even assuming he is on dialysis. He could have end stage disease but not have reached the stage of needing dialysis. In addition, the bed at home would probably be a lot more comfortable. The TV or choice of reading material a lot more luxurious. Nice silk PJs and nurse to cater to every need. 18 months of that, likely extending to several years, seems hardly a prison sentence, more like an elegant exit from a life of excess.

I’ve never understood what he talked to LE when they came to his door. I know he had lived with the secret for a long time and needed to tell someone, but why not ask for a lawyer?

Playing hard to get helped him mislead people. If he’s turning away investors, he must be legit.

Goldman and Renaissance wouldn’t touch him. Someone at Renaissance sent a memo questioning his returns.

Apparently they've gotten more specific. After a botched attempt to collect a sample, I finally succeeded and sent one in, and the results are:

    48% Korea/North China (48-50% range)
    26% Ireland and Scotland (i.e., Celtic) (0-26%)
14% England, Wales and NW Europe (0-17%)
    8% Germanic (0-22%)
    2% Japan (0-5%)
    1% France (0-1%)
    1% Sardinia (0-4%)

    What I expected:

    50% Korea/North China
25% Ireland, possibly with some England tossed in
25% Germanic (also possibly Ashkenazi/German Jew, which didn't turn up)

Apparently my German side has substantial genes in common with people who emigrated to England or further west in Europe. (There are people in this group in Germany, but the bulk live in England, Wales or Belgium.) I also don't know at what point the Sardinian showed up, assuming it's not just an artifact, but presumably that's part of the Germanic/England, Wales and NW Europe heritage.

Japan is also a puzzle; it'd be more likely to see it going the other way (a tiny bit of Korean among Japanese). But it's less of a geographic surprise and could reflect very remote ancestry.

These are Ancestry DNA results, btw. I specifically asked that they not look for genetic matches.

Having taught this to seniors, I'd say about 70 percent or so of the the students really took it in and learned a lot from it. At that age, they really are about to buy their first car or rent their first apartment, so they were paying attention. My high school in particular has a lot of what we called "opportunity youth," so in many cases they weren't really learning this information for their parents or only some of it.

But you're right, about a third or so of the students blew off the class, but pretty much in the same way they blew off every class. Some kids just didn't really care about school or learning, regardless of the subject. They would be the ones asking, "When are we every going to need this stuff?" in math class and then coming to my class, filled with practical information that they would very likely use and saying the same thing.

If you're in end stage renal failure and choose hospice, I'm 99% sure that means foregoing dialysis, and usually death comes within a couple of weeks assuming the kidney failure was total. Being on dialysis 3 times a week is an existence, not a life, as the procedure is very taxing for most patients. My mother was on dialysis 9 months before she died and by the time she complained about it, I didn't feel I could ask about stopping it because she had some dementia and I as her caretaker had a conflict of interest.
OTOH columnist Art Buchwald famously went into hospice for kidney failure and his kidneys bounced back, giving him an unexpected 18 months...

I’ve dealt with being a caregiver for someone whose condition often led to death within months. We enjoyed two and a half years together following diagnosis.

“less than 18 months to live.” is only, at best, an educated estimate, not an absolute certainty. May be sooner, but could very well be later. I think it’s too soon to consider an early release.

Background information for those who don't live in Texas.

    1. Texas requires a yearly car registration.
    2. To become registered a car requires a yearly inspection. The inspection includes obtaining data from the OBD Ii (On Board Diagnostic) Computer as well as checking things like tire tread, turn signals, headlights, windshield wipers, etc, etc, & etc.
    3. Once the car has passed the inspection and shown current insurance, you are given a sticker to put in the lower left corner of the front windshield.
    4. License plates are also renewed yearly. There may be some exceptions for this as I think in the past occasionally license plate registrations might be good for more than one year. But I'm not sure if that's still true.
    5. Initially when you renewed your license there was a small tag (label) that went on the license plate. Then Texas decided to get rid of the license plate labels and instead have a sticker that went inside the car near the registration sticker. About five years ago, Texas combined the vehicle inspection registration sticker and the license plate registration sticker into one sticker.

Now that we have the background information, let's set the scene.

Time: A late night in FriscoC the first week of February in this the year of our Lord 2020 either shortly before or shortly midnight.

A weary Gman (he's just had an assignation) is beginning his trek home.

All of a sudden Gman looks in his rear view mirror and sees flashing lights. Gman pulls over. A handsome young cop comes over and strips naked. (Just wanted time see if you were paying attention.)

Actually the nice policeman says the reason he stopped Gman was because of an expired registration although he isn't looking at the car's registration sticker when he says this.

Gman then exclaims in a bewildered voice, "I do have a current registration sticker."

The cute (had I mentioned that before?) policeman ?‍♂️ asks Gman if he had just registered the car recently. Gman tells him that he had just had the car registered earlier that day. (yes, Gman was a bad Gman for driving around with an expired registration for 2 months as the registration had expired in November).

The cute ?‍♂️ said the system must not have updated yet (and eventually handed Gman a warning ticket (which he really shouldn't have done as Gman was all up to date registration-wise and had been for at least the last 11 hours and had the all the correct paperwork and sticker.

Gman asked the cute ?‍♂️ If the only reason for the stop was the "expired" registration? The ?‍♂️ answered affirmatively.

So the conundrum is what made the cute ?‍♂️ stop Gman's car. The cute ?‍♂️ Obviously hadn't looked at the au courant sticker on the windshield as it was au courant.

Does this mean the cute ?‍♂️ Was bored and randomly entered Gman's license plate number into his police computer as Gman passed him. Or is there something in the car or the registration sticker that can broadcast information to some receiver possessed by the cute ?‍♂️ . Or is there another answer not dreamt up in my philosophies as to how the cute ?‍♂️ Decided to inspect Gman'a car.

Well hospice care usually suggest that the patient ought to have 6 months or less to live in order to qualify hospice care which is generally for comfort. . When he gets there, then perhaps, as long as he is only receiving hospice care. Any other care is an attempt to prolong his miserable conniving life and that extended life should be spent in prison.

Long standing advice is also for news stories to be checked. Furthermore, it might well have been impossible to cancel a planned work trip at the last minute due to the symptoms she reported, which I experience (sans fever) every single day due to chronic illness that isn't transmissible and which without knowledge and reporting of possible pandemic outbreaks the individual involved has no reason to think are a big deal. Employers are not always understanding. While a somewhat different issue, Starbucks just recently gave its baristas sick days to encourage them not to work when they're ill.

I'm going to sound grumpy and uncivil, but too bad: this is just more of the usual bootstrapping mumbo jumbo.

This is more valuable and necessary than much of what's covered academically in high school. Note I don't say elementary school; basic reading and math skills are vital for everyone capable of attaining them, which, hello, isn't everyone. Seems to me that you should show more respect for people's differing abilities instead of writing off everyone you perceive as inferior to you, especially given views we have debated elsewhere over whether abortion should be legal.

As for the home: some homes function with a parent or parents who work at night or work two or more jobs just to keep afloat. Some parents themselves don't have these skills or knowledge. And some parents actively discourage such knowledge, like the father of a college housemate of mine who didn't know anything about checking accounts because her father (an engineer, so not an uneducated man) controlled the family finances and contact with others. It's amazing enough he let his kids attend public school, but they weren't allowed to participate in after school activities.

So, basically, your post is a paean to circumstances you found yourself in but which don't apply to everyone. Congratulations on once again mistaking yourself for the paradigmatic human being.

(Those of you who wonder why I'm being so critical probably don't participate in the Politics forum.)

Edited to add, which I forgot but reading other posts reminded me: This is something that doesn't increase educational costs by much but levels the playing field and makes living effectively more likely. As such, it's like any good educational idea: better for everyone, and everyone benefits except con artists, grifters and those who make their living off of financial ignorance.

Also, somewhat unrelatedly, we need civics education and a demystifying of actual, as opposed to aspirational, history, especially US history.

It used to be banned but I have been seeing it lately on Grindr in some variation or another. I use "Jen" as part of a longer display name and have had no problems. Yesterday I did try to put a "rose" emoji in my profile and was automatically told that roses are no longer acceptable in a profile. Sometimes, in the "About Me" section I will state that "me and my friends, US Grant and Ben Franklin, are looking to meet hot guys" -- and, at least one younger guy stated that "sorry, he didn't do group sex" - not sure if he was serious. I just got back from Florida where I had really good luck on Grindr though one guy immediately asked (with no prior interaction) whether I had Cashapp? Discussing payment options right off the bat is a no-no for me.

I was a little creeped out in Florida when I was sitting in my Airbnb apartment when a couple of times I saw a profile that stated the person was "1 foot away." I peeped out the window, just to make sure. I'm not sure how another Grindr person can be one foot away w/out being in the same room?

To insure I was on the up and up, they wanted me to register with some website that would verify my identity. I wasn't clear on how signing up on a website would make sure I wasn't going to go Chuck Norris on them. Needless to say I passed on the opportunity to meet these two guys.
