When I was 22, 3 generations of my family took a cruise. It was my first. I was naive and had a girlfriend at home and knew I was attracted to men but didn't identify as gay. Decades ago the chief Buddhist monk on the-then main street in Chiang Mai picked me up as I toured his temple.  The "affair" lasted several weeks, and our primary place to rendezvous was in his room at the temple.  At that time it was hard for me as a Westerner to understand his unconcern to be secretive particularly given his elevated position.  He invited me to his hometown for a festival and was proud to introduce me as his Western friend.  We stayed with his mother and made love in his room.  I don't recall there being a need to close a door or be hush hush.  He told me that a significant number of Buddhist monks are gay.

Some years ago I spent a week in Thailand, at a time when it seemed the country's principal business was sex tourism. I got in a cab at the airport and headed to town. It was a modest but beautiful traditional teak house in the water, on stilts. We had such a good time, we spent the whole week together...he tourguide by day and bedmate by night. He was interested in going to fancier westernized restaurants than I would have picked, but I got to see things I never would have on my own. And I also got to experience a culture that is not as nuts about sex as our Judeo-Christian culture...a culture where sex was considered good and normal, a culture where escorting is just fine, thank you, and a culture where the buying and selling of sex is a dignified, classy operation, in the light of day, without embarrassment. 
This experience became my ideal about how sex fits into a sane culture, with pride and no shame. What a concept! And it also cemented my love of Asian boys, and Thai's in particular, whom I find both physically and spiritually beautiful. This is one thing that brought me to live in San Francisco, and has proved true to today. And I have found some beautiful boys on this site that bring me the same pleasures Aroon did so many years ago. I only wish they could feel as publicly free as I experienced in Thailand. I can see American sex shame affect their self-image. Tis a pity.
