  1. Soeaking of flour, has anyone noticed it's been difficult to find lately? I looked at two or three different Walmarts for over a week, and I only found things like almond flour and corn meal/flour. Yesterday I finally found some wheat flour. There was a single 5 pound bag of Arrow Mills Organic All Purpose Flour for $4.97. I don't really bake. But I decided what if I decided to make a no knead bread or wanted to make my own oven fried chicken mix. Plus it looked so lonely on the shelf with no other bags around. So I bought it.

if you think it will take you months to use it up, consider freezing it in 1 pound packages.

  2. One of the largest pork processing facilities in the US is closing until further notice

One of the country's largest pork processing facilities is closing until further notice as employees fall ill with Covid-19. The closure puts the country's meat supply at risk, said the CEO of Smithfield, which operates the plant.

"The closure of this facility, combined with a growing list of other protein plants that have shuttered across our industry, is pushing our country perilously close to the edge in terms of our meat supply," the meat processor's chief executive, Kenneth Sullivan, said in a statement Sunday.

"It is impossible to keep our grocery stores stocked if our plants are not running," he said. "These facility closures will also have severe, perhaps disastrous, repercussions for many in the supply chain."

The Sioux Falls, South Dakota, facility accounts for 4% to 5% of the country's pork production and employs about 3,700 people, according to Smithfield.

another reason to purchase local small farm meat

  3. What a mess. 17 cruise ships currently off Florida and not being allowed to dock. Some have only crew on board others still have passengers. Some have sick people on board. US Coast Guard no longer wants to take responsibility for evacuations nor allow docking and de-boarding. Some(Many?) of the vessels are Bahamian-flagged (even though they belong to US cruise lines) and some ships are being directed to seek help from the Bahamas. Some ships being told they may need to remain sequestered offshore indefinitely.

COVID-19 may destroy the cruise industry.

then they should file for bankruptcy in their country of incorporation and let the chips fall where they may. Equity and bond holders should take the hit not the American public

  4. I noticed only because the entire canned goods aisle was cleared out. Last month I bought canned green beans (guilty pleasure) and noticed canned asparagus. The supermarket (Safeway) also had two kinds of canned zucchini - Italian style and plain. Never had I seen canned zucchini. Sounds equally disgusting as canned asparagus.

Methinks the canned zucchini will be tossed at the same time as the canned asparagus.

in a pinch you can use the italian style canned zucchini in a pasta sauce.

  5. I think I’ll hold off going to the store. Instead of the usual two eggs, two pieces of toast, and a whole turkey sausage patty for breakfast, or two pieces of chicken at dinner, cut all the portions in half. May lose some pounds in the process, as I surely need to do it.

i am being much more careful with the amounts that i cook and i am forcing myself to eat any leftovers for my next meal. I also am eating less and not drinking anything except water

  6. Unless you have as many kids as the Duggars, what on earth are you going to do with 5 gallons of milk?? It doesn't keep in the fridge for that long, and really, how much milk can you drink?

i am not excusing the behavior, but you can freeze milk

  7. I just smacked my head 2 minutes ago because I cant believe I didnt think about it for myself. Have you looked to see if Vons, Freshdirect, or other supermarket sites delivers to your area? It may be faster and easier than getting up and waiting to be the first one in the store. If TP is a issue you may want to invest in a Japanese toilet seat. OMG it is so amazing having heated toilet seats and it has a bidet making clean up every easy. Some even have colored lights.

  8. Anyone listen to the audiobook?

This is the 2nd time this week I have heard someone mention it, was just about to get the ebook, but the idea of a Stephen King novel on audio is intriguing. Any thoughts?

i do audio books all the time. I can listen and do other things at the same time

  9. for over 45 years I was in the financial field. my primary care doctor saw the train wreck that was headed my way, when it hit he told me he saw it coming. when it finally happened, my doctor told me "you will find something that is far more fun and enjoyable". he was correct. I now have 4 part time jobs, at the end of the day I am physically tired, but happy. I still have issues with how my financial career ended, but I am so happy it did.

  10. Hey fellow forum member,

have you considered buying some investment property, and then using the residual income to pad your funds, post-retirement? It may be a good option.. also if the property increases in value you can then sell it cash out and re-invest.

Also, you mentioned not having a “partner”.

    consider getting one.....

Since most relationships these days aren’t traditional in any sense, find someone (a good friend), who is also single and propose “partnering”, to combine incomes and live comfortably together in retirement...

I’ll let you in on a little secret.... most “open marriages and relationships”, have the premise around financial security...

I used to shun it as a mockery of a “real” relationship, but now I realize how smart it is....

Me and a good friend have skirted around the idea of getting married to have larger property buying power as well as a padded travel budget....

This is how it’s done in 2019 ????

this is an interesting comment. many heterosexua couple over the years have NOT gotten married because of the potential of reducing monthly income. Now gay couples are getting married to increase monthly income. go figure

  11. The Fed is going to change emotional support animal rules and I’m glad

We all might not agree on this but I'd rather knowing the rules in advance instead of relying on the subjectivity of an airline employee who might have a bad day... At least after the rules change disable people will truly be protected by the law and not depending on the kindness or unkindness of airlines employees and other passengers.

Now let's address another issue.. some should buy 2 tickets, the 2nd one half off.

I don't like sharing my seat with anyone. I paid for it, I want all of it.

  12. Usually I have the local friends and relatives over, around 8-10 people. Last Thanksgiving, my longtime friend and roommate Therese passed away the day before, so Thanksgiving was basically called off- drinks at the lounge of the Chinese restaurant in downtown Tigard was the get together, as a farewell to her. This year, my brother's inlaws asked if I could do a ranch-sit for them at their orchard in the Columbia River gorge above Hood River, OR, so they could travel- I jumped at the chance, to have the time alone and not have to be reminded about all the changes over the last year. Its been bittersweet, but I did cook up a regular turkey meal and fed the two farmhands staying over for the winter. At least the food isn't going to waste, could not have eaten all that myself! Happy Thanksgiving to all of us!

yours sounds like a perfect holiday

  13. There are a couple of restaurants in town that I like, but have piano players who sometimes play during the meal. There have been times when I've invited people to one of those restaurants, and I get the response something along the lines of "I like the place, but I can't talk over the piano." Never in my life has someone told me "Let's go to the restaurant where they play the piano!". Maybe the people I know are not the norm, so I thought I'd ask here. Since there is at least some downside to having a piano player in your restaurant, I wonder why some places do this. Are there some of you who seek out restaurants because you enjoy hearing someone playing the piano while you're eating out?

just the other night I was at a Mexican Restaurant with a two person musical attraction. Didn't like the noise.
