I think that’s right. Our family cars never lasted more than 5 years. But we were rough on them as they had to navigate gravel roads to our cottage that lasted well into the 1950s. And the car would be loaded down with four kids, a dog, food to last at least a week, and luggage. Then in the winter, the salt on the roads in Montreal would eat away at them from the bottom. Even so cars are much better built today and last longer. My Mercedes turned 20 this year and is still going strong! Lol

I think the acid test will be after REM opens and people are then able to compare the time it takes to get to the airport from downtown hotels, where most business travellers and many tourists stay, and the airport.

I’ve watched over half of the documentary and will finish watching it later but the main story has already been told of the rise and fall of Michael Alig. What a story. It covers the period when New York hit bottom in the late 70s and early 80s and then through to the resurrection after the demise of the hedonistic club scene of the 90s which Alig had been such a central part of but consumed by ultimately. Giuliani is credited with routing out the druggies of the club scene Alig inhabited. He and his kids flourished after the death of Andy Warhol, whose pop art style is reflected in their style. I remember tales of the Limelight but my time a decade earlier had been to the dingy clubs on the west side like the Anvil and the Ramrod. Completely different style of gay life. Quality of Life became the watchword and it led to the gentrification of NYC which allows hedge funds to flourish and artistic creation to wither away. So life goes.

I wondered about the geography of the two routes because it seemed to me that if one were going under Mount Royal, one was necessarily going sideways to where Dorval is. Going from downtown through the Turcotte Interchange seemed to me to be heading directly to Dorval. But the important thing is to have a route with no stops between downtown and the airport. With stops you cause delays and the taxi option wins out.

I wasn’t very focussed on the NY scene during the period of the late 80s and early 90s as I had built a cottage in a compound with other gay friends and we spent all 4 seasons having fun in the natural environment. It only lasted 5 years as the core group got AIDS and died. But at least drugs didn’t get them. It was a crazy time. Lucky I survived.

This reminds me of the Mirabel debacle. They built an airport there that nobody used because it took too long to get there from downtown. I read that the REM goes through the old Mount Royal tunnel to the north to catch the suburbs and does not provide the shorter direct route from downtown to the airport. Most people wanting to save time, which is the point after all, will have to take a taxi. Which defeats the whole purpose. I don’t know what they thinking.

When I think of it, my mother wanted a new kitchen in 1955 after her dad died and left her some money. So she got all new appliances to go with her dream kitchen. And those appliances lasted forever. The refrigerator, a Frigidaire, was still doing duty in the basement of our cottage in 2013 when we sold the place.

That applied to cars and appliances. Lol

There’s still time to do some restoration work. The 1950, 60’s models were built to last. They just need some TLC.

I’ve said it previously and there was a huge thread about him and his run ins with the law. But Cade Maddox is a big fave of mine and today I discovered he’s been in Montreal since earlier this week. And he’s leaving tomorrow. Am I upset or what. I sent him a message but in the past he doesn’t reply to RM messages , it seems. Last time he was in Montreal was in October. Maybe I’ll get lucky some day.

That comes across as accusatory to me. Just using the word “stole” implies a crime. To say that, impugning his character, and then saying, “not a big deal” is just compounding the accusation since by raising it at all, it is clearly a big deal. I would not get all in a twist over a half empty bottle of toiletries. Now if he walked off with something or real value, like a piece of art, that would be a different kettle of fish.

He was discussed here a few months ago in the Fetish section about a video he did of himself eating his own poop. He actually made it hilarious. Sad to see such a vivacious type end his life this way. I’ve had 2 friends die this way, one a 15 yo in my class in HS and another a 39 yo friend some 35 years ago. In neither case did the families acknowledge the cause of death. They went with the suicide explanation. Somehow death by sexual misadventure is hard for some people to accept.

Merry Christmas from the green North. First time in years we have absolutely no snow. And relatively balmy temperatures.Just rain!

I I agree about the furniture you sit on, like sofas and easy chairs. But it is easy to mix in more comfortable items such as these and still retain the look with lamps, tables and art pieces that evoke the era. I did this with a 1950’s house I once had in Miami and it worked really well. Just keep with clean lines, not the overstuffed look.

Chicago has an enviable legacy of some of the greatest modern architecture in the world, not just North America. The one time I visited Chicago, I spent a day just going around having a look at it. I’m glad the city is taking the steps to preserve it for future generations to enjoy.

That is what I think of the architecture and interior design of 2020 Manhattan condo. All glass and white walls and furniture. No art or books to be seen, unless a token thing here or there. Mid-century modern needs the right furniture and accessories to make it highly liveable.

In his ad he says 2020 is full of bad memories. He just added one.
