New York City is actually one of the safer places to be right now, compared to all other major cities in the US and many smaller ones as well. You might want to look into their reporting systems and health care infrastructure before hopping on a plane.

As I recall it was the Plaza Accords in the mid 1980s which cheapened the US dollar against European currencies. Reagan was the President and the US took drastic action to become more competitive. I was living in Switzerland at the time and our Canadian dollar got dragged down with the greenback. It was amazing how fast it happened.
