I believe it was Queen Victoria, George V's grandmother, who dictated that Mary Teck, who was of only minor royal blood, marry George after Prince Albert died shortly before he was to marry her. As it turned out, they had a successful marriage and George V did not have a mistress like his father Edward VII had. His eldest son, Edward (or David as his family called him) had several mistresses, the last of whom he married by giving up the throne. Charles, on the other hand, got to marry his mistress after the one time Princess of Wales died in a car crash in Paris. Mary Teck would have rolled in her grave at that development.

I just did an overnight two nights ago which was a spontaneous decision. I think Charles will choose George VII as his name on becoming king. His Christian names are Charles Philip Arthur George. King Charles would recall unpopular kings, there is no precedent for King Philip and he would compare unfavourably to King Arthur, at least the legend. He has a legitimate claim to George and his grandfather George VI was very popular and played with Charles when he was a young boy. While Edward VIII was called David by his family, his title as prince was Prince Edward of York. So King Edward VIII was a natural choice. His father, George V, was Prince George of Wales and was not originally in direct line to the throne until his older brother died. He not only got the throne but also the fiancee of his older brother, Queen Mary (Princess Teck). I don't think what the royal family called the princes prior to their becoming king enters into it at all.

I am very happy that Lucky lived up to his name on this site and I always enjoy his posts on various subjects. I almost feel like a kindred spirit of Lucky's since we are of the same generation and seem to have had many similar life experiences. Maybe he feels otherwise, of course. Lol

I saw where the prosecutor for SF was overwhelmingly recalled in the voting yesterday. The voters are clearly unhappy with local law enforcement.

I gave up watching tv a couple of years ago when I didn't replace my broken tv. But this weekend I was in Montreal and caught quite a bit of the British ceremonies when I wasn't otherwise occupied (ahem). I quite enjoyed the pomp and ceremony which no-one does better than the British. And they had some decent weather which was a plus for all the outdoor activities. Apparently 10 years ago they had cold wet weather for the Diamond Jubilee. As a Canadian I have ambivalent feelings about the monarchy but only as it relates to our situation in Canada. I think it serves the British people well but not our people quite so well. For instance Charles and Camilla just had a three day visit to Canada, the first in several years, and avoided Quebec including Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. So the three largest cities in Canada representing about a quarter of the population if you include their suburbs. They spent one day visiting the far north to meet with some aboriginals. Relations between Canada and its indigenous people are fraught with tensions these days and the British Crown does have a unique relationship with them through the treaties that were signed several centuries ago. Charles is unlikely to be held in much esteem or affection by Canadians when he ascends the throne unlike the way his mother is today. The future of the monarchy in Canada is going to be put to the test. He may flunk.

I've never stayed in the old town but wandering around in the daytime I think there are mostly boutique hotels like M. The area does have some nice restaurants and lots of tourists day and night during the season. If your focus is the village for evening activities I wouldn't stay in the old town. Just my opinion.

Maybe that is why these days car doors automatically lock once you are underway.

I hope you've gone to a place with nice weather because right now I've enjoyed three days in a row of beautiful late spring sunshine and temperatures right here in Montreal.

I'm in Montreal now for the same period as the op. Won't be going to the stripper bars this time also. Maybe some time in the future.

I agree the village is not a short walk to downtown, more like a 10 minute cab ride. In Montreal right now and one thing to consider is that is a safe place to visit. Crime seems to be very low and thank God, no mass shootings. Of course its had a few in the past but I can only recall one that happened over 30 years ago and led to tightened gun restrictions. And more are coming.

I walked by the Chateau Versailles this morning on my little walk after breakfast. It looks good and I did stay there 40 years ago once. Its small so privacy would be my concern about taking visitors back to my room. Also its not near the old town which would be a 40 minute walk or more down and uphill on the way back.

I'm in Montreal right now enjoying beautiful weather and a couple of hot men during the evenings. As a Canadian the exchange rate is not a consideration. I'm stating at the Omni Mont Royal which is in a very beautiful part of downtown Montreal. With taxes and all it will be about $400 a night plus valet parking another $120 for 3 nights. Is it worth it? Absolutely. The rooms are nice and have 2 double beds, one for sleeping and the other, well guess. It has an outdoor pool and attached Jacuzzi which my friend and I enjoyed yesterday before moving on to indoor pursuits. Its got a nice cocktail lounge off the lobby where I will be entertaining this evening before going upstairs to my playroom. The restaurants around the hotel are very good and great variety to choose from, all within a 10 minutes walk. Another trip without dropping in at the Village. I wasn't attracted to the stripper bars because of the latest problem with Monkeypox. Oh and the city is doing a great job on cleaning the streets. Work crews visible everywhere doing a superlative job. These are the little things that make a visit so pleasant. Of course the eye candy on the streets everywhere and in the bars and restaurants never fails to stimulate the senses.

The ones dying from it in my area are all very senior citizens, usually in their 90's. But then the Queen had it earlier this year and survived. Btw, not to hijack this thread but the tv here in Canada has just been bingeing on coverage of the Platinum celebrations in London. Makes you think that when she does go, the state funeral will be unlike any other since Winston Churchill's.

I flew in a DC3 in the late 60's which was operated by Quebecair. You got on near the rear and the aisle sloped upward. It was a real workhorse and considered very safe. It wasn't pressurized as I recall.

I have a family practitioner and have had him for over 20 years. I ended up with him after my gay doctor died at a young age and his practice was distributed to 4 doctors, none of whom were gay. He knows I am gay but I have always felt that he didn't have the same rapport with me as my old doctor did. So I go to a health clinic for my std checkups. Now I always just deal with a nurse, who has recently retired so I haven't met her replacement. But she is the one I make an appointment with and she tests me and has once treated me for gonorrhea of the throat. Whether she confers with a doctor I have no idea but I don't need to see the doctor for a referral.

That's not the case in Ontario. You can just go to a walk-in clinic. I'm surprised about BC. Here there is a shortage of doctors and not everyone has one. But I used to live in Quebec and they have walk-in std clinics as well.

What a difference a week makes. Hospitalizations are skyrocketing in Los Angeles County and in Oakland, two of the largest counties in the country. Alameda County has just re-imposed the mask mandate in most indoor spaces and other places including transit. Los Angeles County director of health said that if the current daily cases of 400 hospitalizations continues then it will re-impose mask mandates as well. Of course our resident Dr. Denial will no doubt trot out his usual diatribes denying there is anything to worry about.

As I said in the first sentence of my post, I didn't follow the trial. So I don't know why you had to ask the question. As to the evidence, I understand there was abuse on both sides. A messy marriage it appears. Given their position and wealth, the case was carried out as a libel action. People of a lower status would have faced criminal assault charges.
